MT. HOOD ROAD CLOSED

loop road, from Warm Springs
junction to Cooper Spur, was
closed for the season Saturday.
The State Highway Department
said snow, ranging from three to
eight feet deep, made the closure

ready for flight within five
years.
The team is headed by Sir
Arnold Hall, former head of the
royal aircraft establishment at
Farnborough and new technical
director of the Hawker-Sidde-ley
Aircraft group.
The company announced that
Hall and his scientific-technical
assistants already are working
on a preliminary survey at the
government's atomic energy re
search station at Harwell.
Sources said the company al
ready is negotiating for a site
for a permanent research station
and hopes to have the first plane
to use the energy of the atom
for power on the runway before
1960.
Shoebox Reactor
Informed sources said that a
"breeder" reactor which pro
vides more atomic power than
it consumes may be the elemen
tary power unit in the . plane.
The reactor can be built no big
ger than a shoebox, according
to the sources.
A major snag in the construc
tion of such reactars hitherto
has been the fact that only pure
uranium or plutonium can be
used. The price of these metals
is expected to fall sufficiently
in the next few years to make
atomic propulsion profitable the
sources said.
Other problems the British
scientists and aviation experts
will have to overcome include
designing of some type of safe
ty device to prevent the reactor
from spilling out radioactivity
over a wide area in the event of

Salem (U.R) The average
tax rate of some 17,0(10 employ
ers contributing to Oregon's
unemployment compensa
tion system will rise from 1.17
per cent this year to about 1.34
per cent in 1956, the State Un
employment Compensation Com
mission estimated Saturday.
Notices of increased rates on
1956 payrolls went to 6,141 of
the 11,798 employers who were
under the experience rating
system in both years.
Reasons Listed
Most of the increases were
due to the sliding rate sched
ules adopted by the 1955 Leg
islature because of the declin
ing reserve fund. The new
schedule provides a general rise
of .3 per cent and one penalty
rate above 2.7 per cent for the
first time since 1941.
Lower 'rates were awarded to
752 employers whose reserves
gained considerably during the
1954-55 fiscal year. Tax rate
changes were limited to two
brackets, affecting 86 firms with
rate reductions and 1,459 with
rate rises. Until Dec. 14 the
commission will accept volun
tary contributions from em
ployers who can add to their
reserves enough to lower their
1956 taxes.
The leaning tower of Pisa has
increased its tilt by a little more
than one-quarter of an inch in
the past 12 -years and is now
more than 14 feet from the per
pendicular line.

ing knife, shot and killed the
family's dog, then shot himself
in the chest with a .22 revolver.
Hill and his 31-year-old wife,
Rosemary,- were in Klamath Val
ley hospital here, where doctors
said they would recover.
Britton said the knifing and
shooting apparently was the re
sult of a family argument.

ple. The rate is 16 per 1,000 in
Great Britain and 15 in Sweden;
current figures show.

Dystrophy Associations of Am
erica, Inc.
The announcement was made
Saturday by W. E. (Wes) Cole
man, president of the Medford
local of the International Fire
Fighters and Larry Rose, branch
president of the National 'Asso
ciation of Letter Carriers, who
represent the groups co-sponsoring
the 1955 drive.
Represents Parents
Mrs. Gould was selected to
represent the parents of the vic
tims of muscular dystrophy in
Jackson county. Her son, .Billy,
13, has had the disease since he
was two years of age.
In accepting the position, Mrs.
Gould expressed the hope that
everyone in Medford would give
as generously as possible to help
finance the search for a cure for
the mysterious disease. She em
phasized that her plea was not
just for her son but for all the
other cases in Jackson county
and the more than 200,000 vic
tims all over the nation.
Drive Culminate! Monday
M.D. canisters have been
placed in prominent downtown
locations and the drive will cul
minate on Monday, Nov. 21. On
that day all of the M.D. enve
lopes, which were mailed out,
will be picked up by the Med
ford letter carriers.
