Failure Mystery

Power Administration officials
were ''in the dark" today as to
the cause of a power failure
over a large area of western
Oregon yesterday afternoon.
The failure came about 1:30
p.m. and knocked out about 80
per cent of the power supply
in the Willamette valley. Affect
ed were systems in Eugene,. Mc
Minhvi'le, Forest Grove, Ban
don, Drain and Canby; and
PUDs and co-ops including Clat
skanie, Benton-Lincoln, Central
Lincoln, Blachly -Lao'e; Coos
Curry; Douglas, Lane county, Sa
lem and West Oregon.
Portland's major power dis
tributors also were hit.
Outages ranged from seconds
to minutes with the entire trou
ble lasting about an hour.
John P. Jolliffee, BPA chief
of operations and maintenance,
said "We are completely in the
dark at the moment as to the
cause." He added the cause
would not be known until more
complete reports were in from
control centers and oscillograph
records could be determined.
Hospitals and radio stations
went onto emergency power sup
plies but the outage snarled traf
fic by affecting signals, stopped
elevators, halted clocks and caus
ed other inconveniences.
French Flying Saucer
Said Acfually Meteor
Paris (U.R) Pierre Danjon,
Paris observatory director, said
today the "flying saucer" which
swept across French skies Thurs
day was actually a meteor, "but
what a meteor."
"It was without doubt the
most " magnificient aerolite I
have ever seen in all my career,"
he said. Appearance of the me
teor started rumors that a flying
saucer had sped across the sky.
"It was a wonderful color of
emerald green and extremely
bright," Danjon said.

BASIC PIE CRUST
Sift together: 1 cup sifted enriched
all-purpose or pastry flour, M tea
spoon salt. Cut in until mixture forms
particles the size of small peas. H
cup cold shortening. Sprinkle 2 table
spoons cold water over the flour mix
ture and blend with a fork. Form into
ball with hands and flatten into large
circle. Roll out to size of pan plus V.
Ease Into pan with extra fullness.
Fold excess underpan edge.
Flute by praspinp edpe of crust with
thumb' and forefinger of left hand.
Place thumb and forefinger of right
hand Vz" to the right and make pinch
by bringing hands together. Move
left hand one flute tc right and con
tinue pinching around pan. Make
fork marks over entire pan on bottom
and sides. Bake at 450 for 12-15 min.
FOR DOUBLE CRUST
Double amount of basic pie crust
recipe. Roll out half of pie dough to
size of pan. Place in pan and trim off
excess at edge. Roll out top crust
larger than pan. Brush edge of bot
tom crust with cold water. Place de
sired filling in lined pan. Cover with
top crust. Tuck upper crust under
lower crust and flute as for pie shells.

practice and claiming. When
placing crust in pan, ease in and
cprovide extra fullness to avoid,
shrinking. Follow your recipe . .
too much water will cause a crust
to shrink. Let it "rest" before
trimming and fluting.
