Confidence in Mexico's
Industrial Growth Shown
Mexico City U.R! American
and Canadian-owned power com
panies demonstrated their con
fidence in Mexico's continuing
-industrial growth recently by
announcing plans for more than
$50,000,000 expansion, to be
computed the next five years.
Their decision to invest addi
tional capital in Mexico was
based on two factors:
1. The government's declared
policy of stimulating private in
vestment. 2. An increasing demand for
power by industry and home
consumers, estimated at 10 per
cent yearly in the Federal Dist
rict, which includes Mexico
City, and nine per cent through
out the rest of the republic.
Two Firms
The two private power sys

the Canadian-owned Mexican
Power and Light Company,
which supplies the Federal Dist

Hidalgo. Puebla. Morelos, truer
rero, Michoacan and Mexico, and

Japan To Limit Cotton
Exports To America
Tokyo (U.R) The government
decided Tuesday to limit the ex
port of cotton goods to the
United States in an effort to
head off any American trade
quotas.
The North American Market
Committee of the minister of In
ternational Trade and Industry
imposed restrictions on the vol
ume of exports of all cotton
goods with exphasis on textiles
that complete with American
manufacturers. The committee
feared the United States Con
gress might pass a bill putting
import quotas on Japanese cot
ton goods if Japan did not im
pose the restrictions herself.

Company of New York, now
serves more than 400 cities and
towns with a combined popula
tion of 3,000,000.
By 1959, it will invest S40,-

Impulsora's subsidiary com
panies now have a generating
capacity of 300,000 kilowatts.
The construction program will
increase output one-third.
Part of the money about
$25,000,000 is expected to come
from the U. S. Export-Import
Bank. Impulsora's president, Da
vid H. Matson, said details of the
loan were being completed in
Washington.
Faith In Future
The rest of the money will be
raised in Mexico through pri

Discussing his expansion pro
gram, Matson said:
"The plan is a demonstration
Lof the confidence of capital of
other nations in Mexican institu

of Mexico."
Mexican Power and Light,
which now has a total capacity
of 500,000 kilowatts, is adding a
75,000-kilowatt unit to its Le
cheria thermoelectric plant on
the outskirts of Mexico City. The
new unit, which will take be

stall, will raise the plant's total
power production to approxim

In addition, the company will
spend $8,000,000 this year to im

Gustave Maryssael, president
of Power and Light, said de

commerce and industry in the
region served by the company
have increased at an average
rate of more than seven per

with a jump in purchased power
during 1954 of more than 10 per
