OEA Workshop Slated
A one night workshop for the
Jackson county division of the
Oregon Education association
will be held at Crater High
schol cafeteria at 7:30 p.m. Wed
nesday, Nov. 16, William E.
iluck, president of the local
chapter, has announced.
The workshop is being held
to improve understanding of the
national program and state ac
tivities in meeting county and
local needs, to improve .profes
sional standards and salaries,

Democratic Leader Lindon B.
Johnson is telling friends that
he has no intention of becoming
a serious candidate for the 1956
presidential nomination, it was
disclosed today.
The report circulated here
just before Adlai E. Stevenson,
the 1952 nominee, announced in
Chicago that he is going to be a
candidate. ' -
Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey (D.
Minn, told a Jefferson City, Mo.,
audience yesterday that Steven
son definitely would run.
Humphrey also, said . Stevenson
would enter the Minnesota presi
dential primary.
Favoiita Son Candidate
A number of conservative and
middle-of-the-r o a d Democrats,
particularly in the South, have
been -wondering , if Johnson
might be available for-the 1956
nomination even though he suf
fered a heart attack last July 2.
Friends of Johnson here said,
however, that he is telling fel
low Democrats, including back
ers of the principal contenders,
that he will not be a serious can
didate, is position presumably
would not rule out his being a
"favorite son" candidate of
Texas Democrats and receiving
first ballot votes of other dele
gates at the Chicago convention
next August.
Sen. Henry M. Jackson CD-
Wash.) said after a tour of his
home state that he thinks the
people there do not want Presi
dent Eisenhower to run again
after his recent heart attack.
"They would not vote for a
part-time president in a world
filled with 24 hour problems,"
Jackson said.
McCarthy Lists Candidates
Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy (R-
Wis.) said last night he feels that
President Eisenhower would be
unfair to himself and to the
American people if he ran for re
election despite his recent heart
attack. t
McCarthy said he considered
as "good candidates" for the Re
publicans, FBI Director J. Edgar
Hover, Sens. Styles Bridges
(N.H.) and Everett Dirksen (111.),
Utah Gov. J. Bracken Lee and
Vice President Richard M.
Nixon.
He opposed Dr. Milton Eisen
hower, the President's brother,
and Harold E. Stassen on
grounds that they represent the
"extreme left wing."
In New York, Indiana Repub
lican Gov. George N. Craig de
fended the administration's farm
program against Democratic at
tacks and said it "will prove
successful if it is not sabotaged."
He said the GOP program of
flexible farm price supports
'will and should be a key issue
in 1956."
Twining Urges Close
Watch Kept on Reds
Honolulu, T. H. (U.R) Gen.
Nathan A. Twining, Air Force
chief of staff, warned yesterday
that the U. S. military must keep
a close eye on the Chinese Reds,
who he said are still expanding
their airfields, bringing in new
aircraft and generally building
up their air potential.
Twining made his remarks
upon his return from a Far East
ern inspection tour.
"I don't think the Russian lul
laby has affected the Chinese
Communist situation one damn
bit," Twining said. "Their am
bition is the same as ever."
However, the Air Force boss
said he was pleased with the
state of readiness in which he
found the U. S. Far East Air
Force, as well as the air arms
of Nationalist China and the Re
public of Korea.
"They're ready . to go," he
said. "I don't think anyone is
going to start an all-out attack"
in the face of U. S. retaliatory
power.

Brings 10-Year Term

Marin County Superior Judge
Carlos Freitas yesterday reduced
the second' degree murder con
viction of Rodney G. Sheran to
manslaughter.
At the same time, Freitas de
nied a motion for a new trial
and sentenced Sheran to San
Quentin for a term up to 10
years.
Sheran, 37, a Greenbrae ex
cavating contractor, was con
victed Oct. 17 of slaying his wife,
Esme, 42, on the slopes of Mt.
Tamalpais last spring.
Freitas said he reduced the
conviction because of a "reason
able doubt" that Sheran . bore
"malice" when he killed his
wife.

viet request that 'some 7,000 So
viet expatriates be "allowed" to
return home by pointing out that
every one of them had expressly
asked not to be sent back to
Communism.
Federal Interior Minister Ger
hard Schroeder said this govern
ment would under no circum
stances put pressure on Russian
refugees to leave Germany after
they had been granted asylum
here.
Three Theft Cases
Reported Here Sunday
Three cases of theft, resulting
in a loss of goods valued at 5235,
were reported to Medford police
Sunday,
Russell Edsel Palmer, 510
West Jackson st., reported that
two shotguns had been stolen
from a bedroom closet in his res
idence some time between 11
a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Sunday.
The theft of a tarpaulin, val
ued at S50. from the playground
at the Girl Scout headquarters.
500 East Main st., was reported
to police by Francis Leischner.
The tarp, which was stolen some
time Saturday night or Sunday
morning, was being used to cov
er a pile of timber. ''
Albert Henry Hansen, 22 West
Jackson st., reported the theft of
some fishing tackle from his
residence. Hansen had-, shown
the fishing' equipment to a man
Nov.. 11 and. had been forced to
leave the house on business.
When he returned the man and
the fishing gear were gone.
FLOATING GAME FOUND
New York (U.R) Police said
they finally broke up a long-run-nir
floating crap game Monday
night because the operators got
a little careless about where it
floated. Vice squad raiders found
the game operating about two
blocks from police headquarters.

day held optimistic predictions
for the American economy, de
spite the farm problem, stock
market fluctuations, and reces
sion threats.
Sen. Wallace F. Bennett (R
Utah) praised the efforts of the
Eisenhower administration to
restore the power of the indivi
dual citizen to solve his own
problems.
"Under the wise leadership of
President Eisenhower the Ameri
can people have begun to re
establish their faith in them
selves and in their traditional
principals of government and to
rebuild again a firm foundation
for a future of prosperity and
happiness, Bennett said in a
speech.
Three Feared Dead
In Crash of Plane
Stockton, Calif. (U.R) Three
persons may have been killed to
day when the private Cessna 170
they were flying developed
trouble in trying to land and
crashed into the Stockton chan
nel where it was run over by an
on-coming freighter.
Only a tentative identification
of the plane had been made be
cause the wreckage sank to the
bottom of the channel. The ma
chine was one believed - to have
been rented last night by a "Cap
tain Reese" of the Merchant Ma
rine for himself and j two pas

Eyewitnesses who boarded the
empty Joyita after it was found
half -submerged near the Fiji Is
lands said there ' was evidence
it had been systematically strip
ped. ' " .
One eyewitness reported the
ship's bell, radios and compass,
and a dinghy were missing.
When the 60-foot converted
yacht first was found last week,
it was reported that the sextant
and. some food stores had been
removed, perhaps by Japanese
island holdouts of World War
II.
The 70-ton vessel was half sub
merged and had suffered dam
age that experts said could have
resulted from a ramming by a
larger ship.
