Sleep Pills Blamed
For Death of Woman
San Francisco (U.R) Mrs.
Penelope Richard Gros, 31, was
found dead in her bed yesterday
by her husband, Robert Gros,
vice-president of the Pacific Gas
and Electric company.
The coroner's office said death
may have been, caused by an
overdose of sleeping pills. An
empty bottle was found near her
bed.
Gros said his wife suffered an
attack of spinal meningitis in
1948 and had suffered a series
of illnesses since. She was hos
pitalized several times this year.
Besides her husband, Mrs.
Gros is survived by two sons of
a former marriage, Robert Fox
III, and Gregory Fox, 6.

MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THHEB
oof
orks for Farmers
w 1
By LYLE C. WILSON
United Press Correspondent
" Washington (U.R) The Mid
west's No. 1 Ike man, back home
after an eastern swing, has been
WTTZZTTTWrn telling the
folks in Kan
sas and Missou
ri what's what
on two of the
hottest politi
cal issues of
the day.
He reported:
1. The Eisen
hower adminis
tration is get-
Lyie C Wilson ting ready to
shoot the works for the farmer.
2. High administration offic
ials increasingly believe Presi
dent Eisenhower will seek re
election. The reporter is Roy A. Rob
erts, a veteran political writer,
but more recently president of
the Kansas City Star Co.
"Just what the detailed farm
program will be hasn't yet been
worked out," Roberts wrote in
the Star.
Plan for Long Pull
"Apparently, the only thing
definite in the thinking of the
Republican leadership is that
something will be done, that it
is a waste of time to do anything
small, and that what is done
should dramatize, if possible, the
administration's sympathy for
the farmer without jepoardizing
the soundness, for the long pull,
of the program now staked out."
Roberts said it is a big order,
almost requiring a miracle. But
such, he added, is the objective
of the Eisenhower administra
tion for the 1956 presidential
election year.
He reported that the big men
in the administration who are
swinging to the belief the Presi
dent will run again may be
doing some wishful thinking.
Roberts, himself, does' not think
the President will go again. But
he wrote that the outstanding
impression gained during an
eastern swing was the attitude
of top administration men to-
Red China May Free
California Priest
Hong Kong (U.R) A Catho
lic Mission bulletin said today
Jesuit Father Thomas Phillips
of San Francisco sentenced to
three years imprisonment in
Shanghai recently, may soon be
allowed to leave Red China.
"A reliable report just re
ceived in Hong Kong states that
Phillips 'was brought out of
prison for formal trial about
two weeks ago," the bulletin
said.
"He was sentenced to three
yars imprisonment. Since he
has been held in jail 28 months
there is a strong possibility he
may soon be deported," the bul
letin said.
Phillips is one of 17 Ameri
cans in jail in Communist
China.
ward a second term. They were
without hope only a few weeks
ago. 1 ,
"The shift in thinking," Rob
erts wrote, "apparently flows
from the President's steady but
amazingly consistent rate of re
covery, plus much deeper appre
ciation of the realities of the
situation.
"Nearly everyone you talk to
among the White House or cabi
net intimates has a different
slant. But- they generally wind
up with the opinion, or let's say
hope, that Ike will see it as his
duty to carry on first for the
cause of world peace, and sec
ond for completion of the do
mestic program he has laid
down for the country;
"Most often you hear the in
timates tell how Ike twice has
sworn to do his full duty as
soldier and president to the
country.
"Summing up, if it is not to
be Ike, the Republicans haven't
begun to give serious thought
to the man they will select.
"They can see an awful mess
ahead."
An awful mess, that is, if Mr.
Eisenhower retires.

Disaster Car Plan Discussion Slated
The Jackson county disaster
car association will hold an open
meeting today at 8 p.m. at the
main fire station, on the corner
of North Front and East Third
sts. -
Purpose of the meeting is to
acquaint representatives of
service clubs and the general
public with the needs and pur
pose of the disaster car organi
zation. The Fraternal Order of Eagles
recently offered to construct a
garage for the unit, which
would be manned by volunteers
and serve the county during dis
asters of any nature.
Work was begun on the car
several months ago by volun
teer workers from the fire de
partment. Funds for the pur
chase of the 32-passenger bus
were raised by an auto show
sponsored by fire department
members last spring.
Tonight's meeting is open to
the public and anyone interest
ed is invited to attend.

Rickshaw Pullers in
South Africa Strike
Durban, South Africa XU.R)
One of the world's most colorful
transport services ground to a
halt today when 600 Zulu rick
shaw pullers took off their leop
ard skins, monkey tails, lions'
teeth and 'ostrich plumes and
wen on strike.
The gaily bedecked rickshaws
lay idle for the first time in his
tory because the husky, six-foot
Africans refused to pay an ex
tra three shillings rent for the
vehicles.
Many of them have given up
the lucrative tourist trade and
returned to their villages in the
jungles.
