Navy Assisting
Stamp Collectors
Washington (U.R) Stamp
collectors have a rare opportun
ity to enhance their albums by
courtesy of the U. S. Navy.
When the Navy's Operation
Deepfreeze shoves off for the
Antarctic in November, the ships
will carry cancellation markers
and official cachets for post of
fices to be established there.
The Navy has agreed to carry
private mail which will be can
celled with special messages. At
the end of the expedition the
markers, called "killer bars,"
will be retired. The messages,
commemorating the operation
will read:
Little America, Antarctica,
USN
Byrd Station, Antarctica, USN
Pole Station, Antarctica, USN
"Because of limited personnel
and facilities, the Navy has
placed a limit of not more than
10 cancellations per collector.
Each envelope must have a three
cent stamp affixed, or a six-cent
stamp if airmail is desired.
Requests should be addressed
to Operation Deepfreeze, U. S.
Naval Base, Norfolk, 11, Va., and
must reach there not later than
Nov. 8.
Nicotine Content
Of Tobacco Reduced
University Park., Pa. (U.R)
The amount of nicotine in tobac
co products is being reduced con
stantly and may be all but elim
inated in the future, according
to Dr. Clifford O. Jenson, pro
fessor of phytochemistry at Penn
State.
Research in tobacco breeding
shows a steady decline in the
amount of nicotine in cigarettes
from three per cent in 1915 to
2.5 per cent in 1935 and two per
cent in 1955.
The future may see a cigarette
with virtually no nicotine and
little drug effect, he said. To
bacco already has been produced
experimentally with .2 per cent
nicotine or less.

Engine Trouble on
Airliner Described
Denver (U.R) Two wit
nesses told a Civil Aeronautics
Board inquiry yesterday that the
United Air Lines DC4 airliner
that smashed into Medicine Bow
peak in Wyoming on Oct. 6,
killing 66 persons was having
engine trouble just before the
crash.
The two witnesses, Ole Alex
ander, a timber operator, and his
mechanic, Vernon G. Calonder,
both of Albany, Wyo., agreed in
their testimony that the plane
appeared to be having engine
difficulty but disagreed on its
"altitude of flight" and the pre
vailing weather at the time they
saw the plane.
Calonder and Alexander were
two of 25 witnesses scheduled to
testify before the board of in
quiry into the crash.
Lumber Production
Combine Opposed
Redding, Calif. (U.R) The
California Council of the Lum
ber and Sawmill Workers, AFL,
told a Senate Interior Committee
here yesterday it was opposed
to the "consolidation of lumber
production into a relatively few
major companies.
A statement, submitted by
Daniel Johnson, San Francisco,
economic representative for the
council, said the "Overall ap
proach by the lumber and saw
mill workers is in the interest
of maintaining small lumber op
erators and to avoid consolida
tion of lumber production into
a relatively few companies."
Johnston, suggested setting
aside some timber exclusively
for small operators, "in accord
ance with the present govern
ment policy on assistance and
protection of small businesses."
Southern California
Growth To Continue
Los Angeles (U.R) The great
migration that has spurred the
fantastic growth of population
in southern California is due to
continue, according to Dr. Rob
ert M. Williams of the School of
Business Administration on the
Los Angeles campus of the Uni
versity of California.
In a recent study, Dr. Williams
compared the growth of south
ern California with that in other
urban areas. He concluded that
migration to Los Angeles will
continue to approximate 100,000
annually.
Dr. Williams analyzed popu
lation movement over a 63-year
period. He found a substantial
correlation between the rate of
migration and business activity,
both local and national. The
principal exception was after
World War I, when recessions
in 1921 and 1922 didn't halt a
migration surge.
Dr. Williams found that Los
Angeles' population growth rate
of 2,199 per cent from 1900 to
1950 greatly exceeded that of
four other metropolitan areas of
the West combined.
