Franklin Stove Low on
Heat But High in Value
If you have a Franklin
itove around the house, or ever
come into possession of one,
don't sell it for cast iron.
Fireplaces are more romantic,
and there are plenty of other
heating units more efficient
than the stove old Benjamin
Franklin invented, but practi
cally any Franklin stove that's
in working order has a value
far higher than what it will
bring as junk.
Sid, a friend of mine, learned
this the hard way. Some
months after he and his wife
had moved an old Franklin
stove Gto the basement, she dis
posed of it and some other stuff
4to a junkman for more storage
fpace and a couple of dollars.
The following winter, they both
decided the stove was much bet
ter than the fireplace and that
it would be smart either to get
it back or find another one like
it.
The following Saturday, Sid
called at the junkyard and
learned the stove had been sold
to a dealer about a month be
fore. Realizing the dealer would
naturally set a higher price if
he knew the original owner
ODDLY SPELLED NAME ADDS
TO REGULAR SAMPLER
You know what a sampler is,
a piece of embroidery that looks
as if the grandmother of Grand
ma Moses had made it when she
was a little girl. They usually
have the alphabet, a farmhouse,
cow, small child and the name
of the maker worked in colored
thread on a sort of gunny sack
background.
Well, some months ago a
friend of mine bought one in an
antique store for $25.
After taking it to three an
tique dealers and getting a top
offer of $10, he became in
censed. He felt it was a good
buy "at $25 and that he ought to
be able to find someone who
would pay considerably more
for it.
"It was dated 1821," he told
me, "and though it was frayed
somewhat around the edges,'
most of the detail in its 14 by
19 inches was just as clear as
ihe day little Mary Shipstead
Jonnes finished it.
"But it obviously would take
more than its primitive art ap
peal to help me sell it," h con
tinued. "And one day while
Slinking of how it must have
THERE SURE IS A GENUINE
"The man at the end of the
bar," said Jim, "kept humming,
'Who'll gimme $20.00 for a gen
uine aluminum $10.00 gold
piece.'
"Honest, Pink, it was as irri
tating as the worst singing com
mercial. So finally I whipped
out a $20.00 bill and shoved it
over to him.
"It was just a gesture, you
understand. I didn't think he'd
actually take it. But he did. He
got up and slapped me on the
back, shoved his genuine alu
minum $10.00 gold piece into
my hand, and with a "Thanks
brother. That's how I got it,'
out he stalked with my S20.00.
As he finished speaking, Jim
dropped the coin on the table
where it rang into silence with
a genuine aluminum ring.
Have I been euchered," said
ijim, as I picked the piece up.
Jim hadn't been. There is
such a thing as a genuine alu
minum $10 gold piece, and he
had it. The item was a pattern
coin, one designed for interna
tional use. but never authorized,
back in 1874 at a time when the
country was bitterly debating
whether it should have a gold
backed currency or bimetallism,
a currency backed by both gold
and silver at a fixed ratio of
value.
On the obverse side was a
beautiful Liberty head with

T
wanted it back, Sid decided on
an indirect approach. He had
learned the junkman had sold
the stove for 525. He was way
off the beam.
I didn't even have the chance
to be indirect," he said. "That
confounded stove was in the
window with a price tag on it,
but turned in such a way that
you had to go inside to find out
what it said.
"I don't know whether the
dealer saw me coming. In any
case he was all prepared. He
had four Franklin stoves but
the best buy was the one in the
window. It was as good as any
cf the others and cheaper. In
fact, he would let it go for only
$50.00.
"It didn't do me a bit of good
to argue. The fellow pointed
out the beauty of the flower
and bird designs on the sides
and top. He opened and closed
the concealed doors that one
could pull across the front and
thumped the basket grate to em
phaciza its sturdiness.
"'Why, I can get $65.00 for
it if I want to hang onto it a
while longer,' he said, at which
point I paid him the $50.00 and
took the stove back home where
it belonged."

far from the Eastern Ohio town
where I had bought it, I decided
to check the phone books for
Jonnes spelled with a double
'N.'
"I found five of them within
a radius ot 300 miles. Natural
ly, it was no trick at all to get
out a circular letter.
"Nothing happened for about
a week, and then one morning
I got a call. A Mr. Jonnes had
received my letter and would
like to see the sampler.
"It didn't take him long to
make up his mind. He looked
at it for about a minute and
asked what I wanted. I told
him to make me an offer, and
he suggested $75.00. Somehow
I managed to look both sur
prised and doubtful before ac
cepting it. As a matter of fact.
I was too delighted to speak
quickly.
"All right, then, $100.00,' he
said, and I promptly took the
money and gave him the samp
ler. Next day, however, I got a
call from another Jonnes, and
judging from his disappoint
ment, I could have got consider
ably more if I'd waited."
ALUMINUM $10 GOLD PIECE

On the reverse was a strange
design composed of a central cir
cle surrounded by six ovel
shaped areas.
In the circle were the sym
bols giving the weight and fine
ness of the gold. The ovals con
tained the equivalent value in
terms of the leading currencies
of the world, $10 and the prop
er amounts 'in sterling, gulden,
francs, marks and kronen.
"A most interesting piece,"
I said. "They were put out in
copper and nickel and gold as
well as aluminum, and though
the market for pattern coins is
limited, yours catalogues at
$110 and should easily bring
half that amount if you are wil
ling to take the few weeks nec
essary to list it in a coin auc
tion." Jim looked a little wistful. "I
suppose it would be worth more
if it were a genuine gold $10
gold piece. I nodded.
J i m looked philosophical
"But I should kick," he said
"How many others have a gen
uine aluminum 510 gold piece?
And besides, this is the first
time I ever ransomed myself
from a captive audience with a
potential cash profit on the
deal."

chart nine of them have been
discovered by University of
California scientists. The new
elements, all heavier than uran
ium run from the atomic num
bers of 93 to 101. And, being
justly proud, Berkeley scientists
named one of them Berkelium.
Typical of how the new ele
ments are being discovered and
named are elements 99 and 100.
They were discovered in radio
active debris collected from the
Mike" thermonuclear test in
the Pacific ocean in 1952. Ordi
nary atoms of uranium, named
after the planet Uranus, were
built up to become atoms of ele
ment 99 and 100 by their cap
ture of neutrons in the test ex
plosions. In their report the scientists
bestowed the names of Einstein
ium and Fermium on element 99
and 100 after the late physicists,
Albert Einstein and Enrico Fer-
