On The Side by e. v. During

When you consider how bach
elors are pampered it makes it
easier to understand why it is
becoming increasingly difficult
for a girl to get a single man L
liiLU illen.1 UJiuiu''
dries have special services for
bachlors which include sewing
on buttons, mending socks, turn
ing over collars, etc. A bachelor
with an apartment can get a
part time maid to handle all his
housekeeping at a very reason
able price. With the maids bach
elors are preferred customers.
In Manhattan there are estab
lishments which will handle
every detail of a dinner party
for a bachelor. That is the buy
ing, cooking, cleaning up. Host
esses tossing parties love to have
bachelors present. At summer
resorts bachelors get special
rates. Some business organiza
tions are anxious to have bache
lor employees in the office be
cause that makes it easier to get
feminine employees. All this not
only makes a bachelor hard to
get but when captured difficult
to keep. He cannot forget how
wonderful everything was when
he was a bachelor.
Get It Right
Note it claimed the one way
street was originated by a New
York City traffic expert about
20 years ago. Nonsense! The one
way street was originated by the
Roman Emperor Hadrian about
1,800 years ago. Hadrian also
originated the idea of the white
line to divide two way streets
and highways. Incidentally Na
poleon originated the idea of
odd and even house numbers on
different side of streets.
Sidelights
Seventy-five per cent of the
wrecked marriages are caused
by interfering mothers-in-law.
Or, so says an expert on the sub
ject of life among the married.
. . . Gregory Peck's favorite dish
is Lobster Leopold and he is said
to insist that the next girl he
marries must know how to pre
pare that menu skillfully. . . .
Dr. Alfred Kinsey plans to
write 18 more books on the sub
ject of sex.
Horses and Women
what size his wife takes in every
article of attire. That is what is
constantly said by those who of
fer advice on how to keep a wife
contented. I claim it is asking
too much of a man. The femi
nine size situation is too compli
cated. For example, I have seen
it claimed that the "junior sizes"
are not necessarily worn by a
teen-ager. Women of 40 or 50
wear "junior sizes." It is a size
designed for those who have re
tained their schoolgirl figure.
Women don't mind the compli
cated size system. They like
everything to be a little diffi
cult. Understanding it makes
them feel smarter.
Asking
Queries from clients. Q. When
and where did Gypsy Rose Lee
make her New York debut? A.
Gypsy's first appearance in
New York as a daring danseuse
was at the Irving Place theater
about 23 years ago. She moved
uptown to the Winter Garden
when engaged for the Shubert
"Ziegfeld Follies of 1936."...
Q. Has there ever been thor
oughbred horse racing in New
Jersey in January? A. Yes, sir.
Around the turn of the century
there was racing daily except
Sunday at Guttenberg, N.J.,
throughout the winter months.
No Shave
"Haircuts Only. No Shave."
That sign is displayed by innu
merable barber shops. Why
don't those tonsorialists get on
the ball and give the customer
more consideration? Why not
give a customer a shave with an
electric razor? One chain of
New York barber shops does
that and so enjoys the gratitude
of many customers. A good
shave by a skillful barber can
be very refreshing. After all
shaving was what barbers were

Those Blondes
These are trying days for
blondes. They continue to suf
fer devastating defeats by the
brunettes. A brunette won the
"Miss World" title in competi
tion with beauties from 21 other
nations. This glamorous black
haired female is Susan Duijm
of Venezuela. She is 5 feet 8

Historic Spot
A tablet at 7 West 46th st,
Manhattan, reads: "Diamond
Jim Brady lived here." Very in
teresting. Perhaps the memorial
tablet idea as to former famous
residents of places in Manhat
tan will catch on. There should
be a table at 28 West 26th st. O.
Henry lived there. He also died
there as he voiced his famous
last words: "I'm afraid to go
home in the dark." Twelve Piel
st. also rates a tablet. That was
the site of Salter's cafe where
Irving Berlin started his career
as a singing waiter. No. 4 East
44th st. was the site of Can-
field's last gambling house.
'Sense in Tax Law'
Said Aim of Mobile
Home Owners Clan
W. R. Mitchell, president of
the Jackson county chapter of
the Oregon Mobile Home Own
ers, and a director of the state
organization, said last week that
members of his group would
work with other property own
ers in the state toward "putting
some sense in the Oregon tax
laws."
Mitchell made his statement
following a number of protests
from the owners of real proper
ty here after the mailing of tax
bills.
"Our group has been the
noisiest group around for a year
or so on this matter of the prop
erty tax," Mitchell said, "but
now other property owners are
beginning to feel the bite too."
Oregon Mobile Home Owners,
Inc., has as a primary purpose
"equalization of tax laws affect
ing their trailer homes." Lead
ers of the group declare they are
not trying to avoid paying taxes.
They say that only 10 per cent
of trailer home owners in the
state are now being assessed,
and that they feel that all
should be dealt with equally.
"We feel that a small minor
ity should not bear the burden
for all trailer owners," Mitchell
said. "As the tax laws are now
written, those of us who are hit
for taxes pay far too much be
cause others pay nothing at all
So far we have been concerned
only with our own problem,
but now we feel that all proper
ty owners should get together
to examine the entire Oregon
property tax structure."
For a different and delicious
topping for dessert, shortcakes,
mix 2 three - ounce packages
cream cheese with 2 tablespoons
sugar, Vi cup milk and Vz cup
teaspoon pure vanilla extract.
Beat with a rotary beater until
fluffy.
