Eugene (U.R Fire of unde
termined origin early Saturday
heavily damaged the Central
Heating Co. plant which fur

ings throughout Eugene's busi
ness district.

to the concrete and steel struc

floor in a boiler room and de
stroyed a fuel bin on the second

Russian Newsmen Say
Their Versions Better
Washington (U.R) Visiting
Russian newsmen came up with
a "familiar Soviet conclusion
Friday after comparing U. S.
Soviet movies on atomic energy
and Washington-Moscow collec
tions of Rembrandt paintings.
The Russian versions of both,
they said, are better.
The newsmen, here for a four
day visit, also resorted to a
familiar Soviet technique of
'registering displeasure. At the
State department showing of U.
S. films on peaceful uses of
atomic energy, the journalists
walked out, branding the mo
vies "old hat."
The head of the group, Eoris
N. Kampov Polevoy, went to
sleep and snored shortly after
the movies began.
Previous Russion delegations
visiting the United States, the
housing and farm groups,
showed no such discourtesy.
The newsmen yesterday
toured the Capitol and visited
George Washington's Mount
Vernon plantation.
PULLED FROM WORK
Nashville. Tenn. (U.R) Of
ficers, who rushed to a down
town intersection to investigate
"a man run over by an automo
bile," pulled a protesting, unin
jured man from beneath his car
where he had been fixing the
brakes.

Wolf Examined By
Two Psychiatrists
Portland U.R Victor Lau
rence Wolf, confessed bomb-
slayer of Portland attorney
Oliver Kermit Smith, was ex
amined by two psychiatrists in
the Multnomah county jail here
Friday.
The sanity test was ordered by
Circuit Judge James W. Craw
ford, who said a report of the
test would be released before
Thanksgiving day.
Drs. Herman Dickel and John
Evans said they would attempt
to determine if the 45-year-old
electrician is sane now. and
whether he was sane at the time
he rigged a dynamite bomb that
exploded as Smith started his car
last April 21.
Addilional Exams
The psychiatrists said they
were closeted with Wolf for about
an hour Friday. They said they
would probably make additional
examinations before reaching
any conclusions.
Wolf is scheduled to appear
before Judge Crawford Dec. 5
for sentencing for the slaying
His attorneys have indicated
Wolf's plea of guilty would be
withdrawn if he was deemed
insane, and a pertinent plea sub
stituted.
Wolf named Smith's widow.
Marjorie, as an accomplice im
mediately after the slaying, but
Mrs. Smith was acquitted in a
jury trial.
Withers Says Wool
Subsidies To Remain
Portland -(U.R) Oregon wool
growers were told Friday they
might just as well become recon
ciled to government subsidies
because they will be here for
some time to come "whether we
like it or not."
John Withers of Paisley, pres
ident of the Oregon Wool Grow
ers association, gave this advice
to delegates to the group's an
nual convention.
Withers said sheepmen, al
ways rugged individualists, had
been reluctant to accept change.
But he warned that "We must
face facts and accept conditions
as the rule and not as the ex
ception."
"Unless we can get adequate
protection for our domestic mar
kets I don't think there is a man
in this room who will live long
enough to see anything but a
subsidized agriculture, whether
we like it or not," 'Withers said.
The Oregon sheepman said the
national wool act was a good
program and given time to op
erate, will achieve its objectives.

Abbott Case Hears End
Oakland, Calif. (U.R) Dis
trict Attorney J. Frank Coakley
of Alameda county believes the
lengthy jury selection in the
Burton W. Abbott murder trial
might be completed early next
week.
He indicated there was a pos
sibility that the jury would be
empaneled Monday.

Employees of Three
Companies May Gel
Guaranteed Wages
Detroit (U.R) Hourly
rated employees of Ford, Gen
eral Motors and Chrysler were
virtually assured Saturday the
guaranteed wage provision in
contracts negotiated between
the auto companies and the CIO
United Auto Workers union
would go into effect on schedule
next June.
Terms of the three-year con
tracts negotiated here earlier
this year stipulate that states
where 66.7 per cent of each
company's employees are locat
ed must permit joint payment
cf company and state unemploy
ment benefits to make the plans
effective June 1.
Chrysler's Plan
Chrysler's plan is certain
since more than two-thirds of
its workers are located in Michi
gan which already has approved
integration of payments.
The union said Friday 65 per
cent of Ford and General Mo
tors workers are in states where
integration of state unemploy
ment benefits and company-paid
benefits has been approved.
The UAW already has receiv
ed favorable rulings in six
states Michigan, New York,
New Jersey, Connecticut, Dela
ware and Massachusetts.
Although company figures on
the number of workers covered
varied with the union's, the
guaranteed wage plan was con
sidered a certainty to go into
operation next June.
In 20 Slates
Ford, which placed the num
ber so far covered at 65.5 per
cent, has workers in 20 states
where integration can still be
approved, placed the percentage
covered at slightly more than
62 per cent.
Workers under the guaran
teed wage are assured of up to
65 per cent . of their normal
take-home pay during 26 weeks
of layoff. The lump payment is
made up of state unemployment
compensation benefits supple
mented by company benefits.
