Jei Pilot Injured
In Portland Mishap
Portland (U.R) A Portland
pilot escaped, with minor in
juries last night when his F-94A
Starfire jet crashed while land
ing at Portland International
Airport.
The pilot was Lt. Col. Forrest
E. Rupley, commanding officer
of the 123rd Air National Guard
fighter, squadron.
Rupley's jet bounced while
landing, and its landing gear
"collapsed," according to Air
Force spokesmen. The plane
skidded nearly a quarter of a
mile along the runway, and was
demolished.
Rupley, hospitalized at the
Portland Air Force base hospital,
was in good condition.

Six Teen-Agers Die
As Train Hits Car
Plato, Minn. OJ.P.) Six teen
agers were killed Thursday night
when a Milwaukee Road passen
ger train smashed into their car
at a crossing.
Four of the dead were boys
and two were girls.
Officials said the car was
smashed into six pieces and
debris was scattered 100 feet
along the track.

named Malheur County Cattle
man of the Year, according to
Tom McElroy, president of the
county livestock association.

Tuesday was election day in a
large number of states (where
governors and such were chosen)
and a VERY large number of
cities, which chose mayors and
other city officials. In general,
it was a local, off-year election,
uncomplicated by national is
sues.
Over the country as a whole,
wherever elections were held,
the Democrats made a VERY
good showing indeed. Republi
can successes were few and far
between.
TH E professional Democrats
are jubilant. They are sure it
portends a Democratic landslide
next year. Most of the abler non
partisan political analysts go
along with conclusion to a rea
sonable extent. They think these
local victories give the Demo
crats ORGANIZATION strength
and thus put them in a good
position for next years' congres
sional and Presidential cam
paign battles.
I'M NO political prognosticator,
but I doubt if these elections
Tuesday had much bearing on
the national picture. It's a better
guess that where the Democrats
won and they DID win in a
great majority of the contests
they had better, or more popu
lar candidates. In local affairs
(including states) there is a grow
ing tendency to vote for the man
rather than the party.
Besides, most of the larger
Eastern cities are run by politi
cal machines, and a Republican
machine can be just as bad as a
Democratic machine. One can't
be familiar with the local sit
uations in all American cities.
It may be that where the Re
publicans lost in city elections
the voters were chiefly intent
on throwing the rascals out.
There is a growing conviction
on the part of voters that a Dem
ocrat can be just as good a mayor
as a Republican and vice versa.
There is likewise a growing be
lief that even a GOVERNOR'S
political party affiliation isn't
TOO important.
National political policies are
being increasingly accepted as
NATIONAL rather than local in
their significance. So it doesn't
necessarily follow that a trend,
even a strong one, in local elec
tions this year can be a positive
indicator of the outcome of the
national election next year.

edge. He is just going out on a
limb and making a personal pre
diction. He adds that he can be
wrong, and if he is " the Repub
licans (Wiley is a Republican)
will have a much harder time."

ness, and his alone because it
is his life that is at stake. It
could be that when the time
comes he will prefer to stay in
the center of things where he

has been for. nearly a

Many good men dread retire
ment. Ike may be one of them.
At any rate, what he does is his
personal affair. I think, how
ever, that Senator Wiley is
speaking the simple truth when
he says that if Ike should be a
candidate again he would win
practically by acclamation.
IF HIS decision is NOT TO
RUN which seems more
probable I'd say the GOP bet
ter stake its future on Ike's pol
icies and the team Ike has built
up and not try to oQt-promise
the Democrats in the way of
giving EVERYBODY what he
wants including a key to the
treasury.

Plane 'Gets Bird'
From Pheasant; Pilot
Treated for Cuts
A new and costly method
came into being Wednesday
night when a Rogue valley
pheasant collided with a West
Coast airlines plane at ihe
Medford airport.
Passengers on ihe regularly
scheduled 4:15 flight lo Klam
ath Falls were delayed six
hours when a pheasant crash
ed through the Windshield of
the plane when Ihe craft was
only a few feet off of the
ground.
Captain William Appel, pi
lot, landed the plane safely
and was treated at a Medford
hospital for facial cuts and
bruises.
The pheasant made a hole
ihe size of a baseball through
the windshield which is about
twice ihe thickness of auto
windshield glass. Estimated
speed of the plane was 90
miles per hour.
What happened to the pheas
ant? No one knows. A few
feathers inside the cockpit
were all thai remained. -
