Group To Study Amazon Pattern
Philadelphia (UP.) A Phila
delphia scientist will lead an ex
pedition to the Amazon River
this year for the purpose of
studying the biological pattern
of the stream.
She is Ruth Patrick, Curator
of Limnology in the Academy
of Natural Sciences of Philadel
phia. For eight years she and her
staff of biologists have been
studying North American rivers.
To advance knowledge of what
constitutes a healthy stream, it
is necessary to examine a tropi
cal river for comparison, she
said.
The expedition is sponsored by
the Catherwood Foundation, of
which Cummins Catherwood, of

foundation has been backing the
academy's research extensively,
one important phase being de
velopment of the Catherwood
Diatometer, ah instrument origi
nated by the academy.
It is used in collection of dia
toms, one-celled microscopical
members of the plant kingdom,
the populations and species of
which in any stream is an index
to its condition.
Beginning in 1948, the acad
emy has made studies for gov
ernmental and private agencies
on rivers from coast to coast, and
in Canada. Its reports are results
of applying the "academy yard
stick," which holds that the com
parative health of a river de
pends upon its ability to support
poulations of animal and plant
life from microscopic forms up
to fishes.
From the knowledge thus gain
ed, in the field and the academy
laboratories, the department is
able to furnish its sponsors valu
able information affecting treat
ment and disposal of industrial
and municipal wastes.
In the short life of the depart
ment, it has grown until it em
ploys in the field survey sea
sons more than 20 scientists and
technicians.
Three Sewage Disposal Plans
Studied by Phoenix Council
Photnix The Phoenix city
council is considering three pro
posals for construction of a sewer
system and means of disposal of
Sewage.
The' council recently received
a report from Harvey and Wat
kins Consulting engineers, Med
ford, on financing three possi
bilities of serving Phoenix with
a sewer system. Del Harvey rep
resented the firm and discussed
various plans with the council.
One proposal is to construct
a separate treatment plant "for
Phoenix, which would cost an
estimated S315.250. The plant,
according to the report, would
be capable of serving 2,000 popu
lation. Second Plan
The second alternative is to
construct a treatment plant in
cooperation with South Bear
Creek Sanitary district. Phoe
nix' share in the cooperation
estimated to be S312.395, includ
ing construction of a trunk line
to connect with a treatment
plant.
The third alternative would
cost an estimated $224,950, and
calls for a trunk line through
South Bear Creek Sanitary dis
trict and a contract with the
city of Medford for disposal. The
estimated cost includes fees to
Medford and maintenance ex
penses. Mayor Dan Adams said the
council indicated it may sched
ule a meeting with officials of
Burmese Ambassador
Plans To Honor Reds
Moscow (U.R) Burmese Am
bassador Maung Ohn has sent
out a circular letter to all for
eign envoys here proposing a
"collective" dinner for the So
viet Council of Ministers, it was
disclosed today.
If the ambassadors agree it
will be the first time the entire
diplomatic corps has entertained
the Soviet government. Last
year Ohn organized a personal
dinner for the Soviet govern
ment but some Western ambas
sadors walked out when they
found out ambassadors of coun
tries like North Korea and Com
munist China were attending.

new household problem in south
ern California an invasion
of homes by upholstery - chew
ing fan palm caterpillars.
University of California Ento
mologist Roy J. Pence reported
the pink caterpillars naturally
feed on the palm fiber to spin
their cocoons, but when they
fall from the tree during heavy
winds, they enter homes where
they shred clothes, drapes, up-
noisiered iurniture and expen
sive rugs.
Pence said the best way to
control the pest is to send a
"palm skinner" up the tree, to
prune out the infested parts and
treat adjacent areas with. DDT.
