American Officials
Arrive in Japan
For Annual Session
Tokyo (U.R) Forty-one
American West Coast officials
and their wives arrived today to
the cheers of flag-waving Jap
anese school children to attend
the third annual meeting of the
Japan-American Pacific Coast
Mayor's Conference.
The group, headed by Seattle
Mayor Allan Pomeroy, landed
at Tokyo's International Airport
shortly after noon aboard a
Japan Air Lines plane.
The two-day conference, which
will b followed by a two-week
sightseeing tour of Japan, opens
tomorrow at Yokohama.
Present Bouquets
As the delegates and -their
wivts stepped off the plane, 17
kimono-clad girls rushed up to
the delegates to present huge
bouquets of flowers to the wives
in the traditional Japanese wel
come. Among the numerous officials
on hand to greet the plane were
Tokyo Governor Seiichiro Yasui
r.nd Yokohama Mayor Ryozo
Kiranuma.
Among the U. S. delegates
were Mayors V. Edwin Johnson
of Eugene, Ore.; Charles C. Dail,
Sr.n Diego, Calif.; Neal S. Blais
dell of Honolulu; H. H. Hendren
of Sacramento. Calif.; John J.
Sheridan of Richmond. Calif.,
and George M. Vermillion, Long
Beach, Calif. Mayor Edward
H. Cushman of Hollister, Calif.,
who arrived here Monday, was
on hand to greet them.
Housewife Loses Chance for
$16,000 in Big Quiz Show
New York U.R) Mrs. Polly
Culbertson, a farmwife from
Pottstown, Pa., who blew a
chance at $16,000 on a TV quiz
show, headed back to a hospital
bed today with a 1956 convert
ible in tow as a consolation
prize.
Mrs. Culbertson, who iuffers
from arthritis, spent the past
week in a hospital at Valley
Forge, Pa., after piling up an
! S8.000 stake in the category,
"literature," on "The S64.000
Question.'
Husband Invalid
Her husband, retired Naval
Capt. W. L. Culbertson, a coro
nary thrombosis case, also is a
patient in the same hospital.
The 59 -year -old contestant,
who had successfully answered
a series of questions on books in
her previous appearance, was
given the chance Tuesday night
of doubling her winnings or
bowing out. She chose to go on,
but was stymied completely by
a multiple-part query on Utopian
literature.
Asked for Authors
She was asked to name the
authors of "The Republic,"
Erehwon." Looking Back
ward," "Brave New World," and
"Utopia."
But when Emcee Hal March
asked for her answers, Mrs. Cul
bertson could only shake her
head and say: "No . . no . . no."
The answers were, in order,
Plato Samuel Butler, Edward
Bellamy, Aldous Iruxley and Sir
Thomas More.
Daniel J. Tobin
Critically III
Indianapolis (U.R) Daniel
J. Tobin, who led the AFL Team
sters Union for 45 years and
was a labor power in the Roose
velt and Truman administra
tions, was critically ill today.
The 80-year-old Tobin has
been in St. Vincent's hospital
here for two weeks. His doctor,
Joseph Dowd, said he is suffer
i ing from high blood pressure
and heart trouble.
11 Japanese Killed
In Mininq Disaster
Fukuoka, Japan (U.R) An
80-foot section of a coal mine
wall collapsed today killing 11
miners and injuring 18 others
in Japan's second major mine dis
aster this month.
On Nov. 1 an explosion at the
Mojiri mines in Hokkaido, Jap
an's northernmost island, claim
ed 60 lives.
Move of Air Force
Headquarters Studied
Washington U.R) A long
range plan under which Far East
Air Force headquarters would
be moved from Japan to Hawaii
and merged with the Pacific Air
Force is under study in the Pen
tagon, it was learned today.
The ' move would not take
place for at least a year and
probably longer, authorities
said.
Custody of Smith
Youngster Sought
San Jose (U.R) Mrs. Ellen
Hightower, of Los Gatos, yester
day filed a petition in Superior
Court for guardianship of her
three-year-old niece whose moth
er, Mrs. Marjorie Smith, was ac
quitted in Oregon, last Friday
of killing the child's father.
Mrs. Hightower skid she had
cared for the child, Susan, since
her brother was murdered by an
auto bomb last April.
Superior . Judge Leonard R.
Avilla granted Mrs. Hightower
temporary custody of the tot
pending a hearing Nov. 30.
Mrs. Smith, 34, was acquitted
last Friday, of conspiring to
murder her lawyer husband,
Oliver Kermit Smith.
Immediately after her acquit
tal she said her first desire was
to get beck her children, Susan
and Greg, 11.
Delegates Drafting
Alaska Constitution
College, Alaska (U.R) Fifty
five delegates from throughout
Alaska met today at the Univer
sity of Alaska gymnasium here
and began the task of drafting a
constitution for the future state
of Alaska. ,
The convention was author
ized by the last territorial Legis
lature. Delegates were chosen
in September in an election
called by the governor and may
meet for a period not to exceed
75 days.

Too Much Politics
In Farm Problems,
AFBF Chief States
"Wichita, Kan. U.R) The
President of the American Farm
Bureau federation" charged to
day that "political opportunists
in both parties" are trying to
make hay out of the nation's
farm problem.
Charles B. Shuman urged
that the question of farm price
supports be taken out of politics.
The experience of the past 25
years shows "that farm prosper
ity doesn't come from political
promises and panaceas," he said.
"It comes from sound pro
grams which permit farmers to
profit from efficient production
of the things consumers want,"
he said.
"And it is possible only in. an
economic climate which allows
our free enterprise system to
work."
Shuman, in a speech prepared
for delivery at the annual meet
ing of the Kansas Farm bureau,
put in a plug for Agriculture
Secretary Ezra Taft Benson's
system of flexible supports for
farm commodities. He said this
"is not perfect, but it is based
on a sound principle."
Magsaysay Passes
Election Test
Manila (U.R) President
Ramon Magsaysay's pro-American
government passed its first
election test with flying colors
today, led by a 39-year-old pol
itical "glamour girl" who once
taught ballet.
Incomplete returns showed
candidates of Magsaysay's Nac
ionalista party leading in races
for six of the nine Senate seats
which were contested.
In gubernatorial races the Na
cionalistas were leading in 27 of
52 provinces and the opposition
Leberals in 16. Nine provinces
still had not reported.
Pacita Madrigal Warns, a 39-year-old
widow who until re
cently was social welfare ad
ministrator, maintained her No.
1 position in the list of winning
senatorial candidates with 454,
095 votes.
Demo Farm Leader
Challenges GOP
Washington U.R) A Demo
cratic farm leader challenged
the Eisenhower administration
today to come forward now with
recommendations for halting
the decline in farm income in
stead of waiting for- Congress to
return in January.
The challenge was issued by
Chairman Harold D. Cooley (D.
N.C.) of the House Agriculture
committee.
Cooley said he notified Agri
culture Secretary -Ezra T. Ben
son nine days ago that he would
summon his committee which
prepare all farm legislation for
House floor debate to meet im
mediately to consider any ad
ministration recommendations.
He said Benson has not re
plied. He added that he suspects
Benson has been "bluffing" and
doesn't have any new legislative
proposals.
Mrs. West brook Pegler
Succumbs in Italy
Rome (U.R) Julia Pegler, 52,
wife of American newspaper
columnist Westbrook Pegler,
died early today of a heart at
tack while vacationing here with
her husband.
Pegler personally announced
the death of his wife after in
forming relatives. He said the
body would be flown to New
York enroute to the Pegler home
in Tucson, Ariz.
The couple had been vaca
tioning in Italy for more than
a month.
Mrs. Pegler was the former
Julia Harpman, a former top re
porter on the New York Daily
News. She and the famous col
umnist were married Aug. 28,
1922.
West Slope Voters
Turn Down Bond Issue
Portland (U.R) Voters in
West Slope, Portland's sprawling
southwest fringe area, yesterday
defeated a proposed $700,000
bond issue that would have fi
nanced a sewage disposal plant
and sewer lines.'
Vote was 585 against the mea
sure and 437 in favor.
