Argument Goes On After 100 Years
Today is the day that the
ground hog supposedly
comes out of the ballot
box looking for his
shadow.
If he sees it, so goes
Maine except for Minne
sota which has 31.
Manchester, Me. (U.R) After
100 years the argument still
goes on: "Did someone walk in
Manchester?"
Townspeople say no one has
ever provided a satisfactory ex
planation for the two perfectly
formed human footprints im
pressed in a moss-covered rock
in Scribner Cemetery.
The rock with the prints was
uncovered a century ago. One
print is 10 inches long and six
inches in width. The other, right
next to it, is half that size.
A Harvard zoologist, Donald
Baird, claims they were carved
of Shady Cove-Trail will hold
its monthly meeting on Monday,
Nov. 7, at 8 p.m. at the home of
Mrs. Frank Dolenshek of Trail.
Father Ziegler of Portland, arch
deacon of the diocese and assist
ant to Bishop Dagwell, spoke at
the Sunday evening service on
Sunday, Oct. 30.
by Indians. He points to the im
probability of an almost instan
taneous formation of rock after
the clay was soft enough to re
ceive a distinct impression.
But the romantic theorists
contend no Indian with a stone
tool could have done such a per
fect job. They think it might be
the footprints of a Stone Age
caveman and his bride that were
preserved through a quirk of
nature.
Other explanations, are offered,
but no one is satisfied.
HEAVY TACKLE
Des Moines (U.R) Athletic
officials at Dowling High school
wondered what to put down in
the weight column on this year's
football programs behind Tackle
Pete Tiano's name. When Pete
weighed in at the gym. the scale
was pegged at its upper limit
255 pounds. Pete weighs that at
least, maybe more. He isn't
saying.
Fire Drives Six From
Portland Building
Portland U.R) Six per

that engulfed the second floor.
Firemen carried Mrs. Mary
Burford, 60, from the building.
She apparently suffered no in
juries. Mrs. Evelyn Shell, 60,
was hospitalized with first de
