$5,000 Bill
Not Too Popular
Washington (U.R) In case
you hadn't noticed, the $5,000
bill has not been "as popular a
medium of exchange" as the
$10,000 bill, says the U.S. Treas
my. The Department s latest re
port shows that as of May 31,
there were 911 bills of the
larger denomination in circula
tion as compared to 678 of the
smaller.
Expressed in another and per
haps more impressive way,
there were over S9,000,000
worth of $10,000 bills circulat
ing when only S3,400,000 of the
$5,000 variety were making the
rounds.
The Treasury points out that
these big bills have only a lim
ited use. For example, they are
used to clear balances between
banks or to close large business
transactions where cash is de
manded. Sawbuck Replaced
Even so, and despite a boom
ing economy, use of these big
bills is on the wane. Fifteen
years ago, there were $60,000.
000 worth of the $10,000 notes
in circulation.
On a more familiar level, the
Treasury report shows that the
$20 bill has replaced the $10
bill as the common denominator
of the American monetary sys
tem. Before world war II, the
economy was firmly based on
the $10 bill. But the sharp rise
in wages and prices that came
with the war pushed the $20 bill
forward.
There are now about $9,500,
000,000 (B) circulating in the
form of $20 bills. The $10 bills
in circulation amount to $6,
400,000,000 (B).
