Old Military Rifle Has
Cheek Rest for Comfort
"I got it for $10," said Jim,
carefully passing me the gun.
I told him it was certainly an
interesting one, which it was.
The weapon was a .58 calibre
carbine of a type used by both
sides in the Civil war when
agents of the North and South
bought up anything they could
lay their hands on among the
arms dealers of Europe.
The most peculiar thing about
it was that the octagonal barrel
had been rounded at the muzzle
for a little over four inches back
from the end. On the right side
of the barrel, fixed in the octa
gonal part was a strong spring
used for attaching the bayonet.
Along the under side of the
barrel, which measured 29 inch
es as against the 44-inch over-all
length of the piece, were bronz
. ed ramrod guides for holding
the steel ramrod.
The stock was a good one,
nothing extraordinary but high
ly serviceable, and with a cheek
rest that seemed more like an
accessory for a sporting rifle
than a military arm. Also, the
stock was checked in the part
IRREGULARITIES ON STAMPS MEAN MORE VALUE
Jack, a French Canadian who
has done well for himself since
coming to the United States back
in 1929, ran across an envelope
recently that he had received
back in 1932.
He had kept it because it en
closed a letter his mother had
sent him along with a check on
the one occasion he had had to
send home for money during the
depression.
"Look at the stamps on there.
One of them's been stamped
twice, and upside down. Does
that make it worth anything?"
There cwere two stamps on
Jack's envelope. They were of
the 1928 Canada air post design,
put out at 5 cents each. Olive
brown in color, they show a
plane above an allegorical group
symbolizing flight.
Both of the stamps were sur
charged with a six between three
horizontal bars on each side of
the numeral as a means of show-

"It looked too good to be
true," said Art, telling about the
dower chest he had just given
his daughter. "We were driving
along a tourist-infested New
Hampshire road when we spot
ted a big antiques sign with that
chest under it, along with a lot
of other things including the us
ual spinning wheel.
"Both my wife and I got out
to look at it. The price was $50,
and because of that, plus the ex
cellent state it was in, she was
sure it was phony.
"I thought so, too, for a few
minutes, but when the owner
told us it was a piece the grand
mother of a friend of his had
brought from Kentucky during
the Civil war there's always
been some migration from west
to east, against the stream I
believed him and bought it. Can
you guess why?"
The chest was about 30 inches
by 18 by 20. It was made of ash,
I think, dovetailed at the corners
and bound with wrought iron.
There were wrought iron han
dles on either end, and there
was even a crude looking lock
of the same material with a key
that actually worked.
There was no ornamentation
on thf piece, except that on the

"One thing that fascinates me
about it is that it is a Czech

I told him that thousands of
guns like his had been sold for
prices ranging from $5 to S10
since the , Civil war, and that

Just to prove I was wrong, he
sold it to another amateur col
lector for $25. But I notice he
didn't buy another one, even
though he has had the chance to
do so, and for $7.50.

appearance, but the other was
inverted and had been printed
twice.
"I've heard that irregularities
like double printing sometimes
add a lot to the value of the
stamp," said Jack.
I. assured him they sometimes
did, as the catalogue indicated in
his case with a price of $55 for
the double inversion, uncan
celled. "But it doesn't say anything
about a cancelled stamp," said
Jack.
I explained that the omission
merely meant that not enough
information was available for
the catalogue's editors to deter
mine a price, and that conse
quently his stamp was so rare
that it should be worth much
more than the uncancelled price.
And it was, to one collector, at
least,, who offered Jack $75 for
it, a figure which he .turned
down out of sentiment.

wrought iron, oval plaque about
seven by four inches in the larg
est diameters. Its design was the
common one of an eagle, left,
with outstretched wings. About
the bird was an oval of stars.
After a long look at the piece,
including even the four short
legs which were probably added
years after the chest was made,
I shook my head.
"Well," said Art, "there are
15 stars around the eagle, which
means that the piece was made
about 1792, or a little later, when
Kentucky was admitted as the
15th state. They stopped adding
new stars to designs on coins
and other things soon after that
and went back to 13 stars for the
13 original states. Furthermore,
the owner didn't say anything
about the number of stars, which
he certainly would have pointed
out if he had known its signifi
cance. I asked Art what he valued
the piece at.
"I had two experts , look . it
over," he said. "One of them
said it was worth $150, and the
other said not to take a cent less
than $400. So take your choice."
