Nothing pe To
Divert Attention
From California!.
By LYLE C. WILSON
United Piess Correspondent
Washington (U.P.) The call
for early public announcement
whether President Eisenhower
will run again
suggest that
some Republi
c a n s believe
Richard M.
Nixon is gain
ing a long lead
on the field.
Mr. Eisen
hower has!
done nothing
to divert pub
lic attention
from Nixon or to weaken public
confidence in his young triena.
On the contrary, before and dur
ing his illness, the President's
likina for and dependence on
Nixon have been freely and en
thusiastically acknowledged. Mr.
Eisenhower now might almost
be said to be giving Nixon a
build-uD looking toward his pos
sible nomination for President
next year.
Nixon At Advantage
However that may be. the
vice-president can accept the a
role to which the President, nim
self. has assigned him without
being liable to the accusation
that he is campaigning for the
nomination. No Republican can
go out for the nomination just
now. Thev must know Mr. H,isen
hoWer's own intentions before
make a move. That is
a considerable handicap when
one o their number is placed by
chance daily in a spotngntea
position where he shows to most
advantage. That is the happy
sDot in which Nixon finds him
self. Alfe others, for the time
being, are in the shadows.
The vice president "already is
a well established national iig
ure. That is what Sen. William
F. Knowland. Senate Republican
leader, may have had in mind
when he called yesterday for an
parlv decision from Mr. Eisen
hower. Knowland said the party
should have time, plenty oi
time, to look over the possible
randidates before choosing.
Knowland, like Nixon, is a
Californian but there is no evi
dence that Knowland is a Nixon-for-President
man. He has
teamed up, on occasion, with
California's Gov. Goodwin J
Knight to lick the Nixon forces
in California. Knight is maneu
vering now fos a bedrock alli-

Nixon. Knowland is believed to
be turning over irhis mind a
go for the presidential nomina
tion. Clamor for Announcement
Most Republicans were clam
oring for months for an an
nouncement that Mr. Eisen
hower would run for a second
term. His illness hushed that
clamor, but it is beginning to
rise again. Knowland is not part
of it. He was saying months ago
that there was no indispensable
man, meaning that Mr. Eisen
hower was nof essential to Re
publican victory in 1956.
Knowland may or may not
eral agreement among politi
cians of both parties, however,
that Mr. Eisenhower would be
the strongest candidate the Re
publicans could put up. Some
Republicans do speculate on the
possibility that he will be a Die
to run again.
No Democrat Speculation
Democrats do not spculate
about that. They have a deep
feeling for Mr. Eisenhower in
his illness and they were con
vinced almost instantly that he
would be much too ill to try
for another four years in the
White House. If their candidate
next year must oppose some
lesser Republican, the Demo
crats will just have to make the
best of it.
The Democrats would like an
earr& Eisenhower decision, too.
But it is not so importanfefor
- ll.. -r, t-i:
tnem as ior me xveuuujji;eiiia.
The early word was that Mr.
Eisenhower would announce his
plans around Christmas or New
Year's. To delay the announce
ment lone thereafter, if he in
tends to serve only one term,
would add to the lead which
Nixon now is achieving and to
anger those Republicans who
would prefer someone else
