"Washington (tj.R; Traffic
accidents are killing 36,000 Am
ericans a year. Does anybody
care?
Of 1,250',?!30 merely injured,
100,000 are disabled for the rest
of their lives.
Last year traffic accidents cost
T3. S. citizens $4,400,000,000 in
medical and burial bills and pro
perty loss. T
Anyone listening?
From the turn of the century
through 1951, cars and trucks
killed 1,000,000 persons. At pres
ent rates it will take only an
other 25 years to add 1,000,000
dead.
. And by 2000 A.D. the accumu
lated toll for the first 100 years
of the motor vehicle in Ameri
ca could hit:
- More than 3.000,000 killed,
more than 100,000,000 hurt, and
some 10,500,000 permanently
disabled.
But does anybody care?
Public apathy toward the
ceaseless carnage on the nation's
roads and streets is, authorities
say, suffocatingly profound.
Of course, there are many
who do care the bereaved,
the Injured, for example, and
such organizations as the Nation
al Safety Council, the Automo
tive Safety foundation, the Am
erican Automobile association,
civic groups and schools, and
hosts of city, state, smd federal
officials, not to mention the auto
and insurance industries.
And President Elsenhower
cares deeply. Last year he great
ly expanded the siz and pro
gram of the White House confer
ence on highway safety, estab
lished in 1946, and called elo
quently for reduction of the
slaughter.
This year, while Mr. Eisen
hower recovers from his heart
attack, the President's Commit

The American Automobile As
sociation makes a business of
studying causes of traffic acci
dents and trying to figure out
how to prevent them. Causes are
myriad everything from alco
hol to zigzag highways.
But what is the one big fac
tor, W. L. Robinson, associate
director of the AAA's traffic en
gineering and safety department,
answered this way:
"It boils down to inattention
and poor judgment."

A scientifically dependable
study of traffic accident statis
tics is impossible because acci
dent reporting, the AAA says,
"is inadequate."
But the National (Safety Coun

there to find out what was going
on when fatal accidents occur
red. They show that in 72 per

guilty of some violation or oth

found mechanically wrong with
the car.
