A Nichol's Worth of
Comment On This and That

Washington (U.R The men
who parachute out of airplanes
hardy breed and they talk
their own di
alect. According to
the Army, the
soldiers of the
82nd Airborne
Division at Ft.
Bragg, N. C,
got a little
weary of being
misunderstood
at the supper
table while
home on leave.
So th8y oSme up with their own
"shop-talk" dictionary.
So, in case you run into one of
the tough jumpers all men of
courage you might paste their
glossary in your bonnet.
You'll know what the kid in
the boots is talking about.
Translated, .the airborne jar
gon goes like this:
"Stid and hook up" meani a
man should check his equipment
before hs dives head-first out
the side or through a hatch in
the belly of his aircraft.
When a man jumps, he doesn't
jump, really, he "hits the blast."
They tell me that refers to the
blast of air that greets him.
A "DZ" is a drop zone. That,
to the jumper is a cleared area
where he .might have a good
chance to dig his heels into the
good earth, instead of a tree or
a river. '
Rough Landing
Wli a jumper tells you that
he has "clobbered in," you can
jolly5 well know, that his landing
was rough. And when he says
that he "landed soff'he means
that everything went off fine.
The jumper uses the word
"gorilla" in a whisper, because
to him that means the nasty,
ornery characters who train
paratroopers.
The "canopy" is the . nylon
fabric portion of a parachute
assembly, the part that bal
loons out. Something pretty im
portant if a man is hanging by
strings in midair.
A "iooth knocker" is a- quick
release , box a thing that re
leases the parachute harness aft
er the jump. Important, too.
All paratroopers are known,
among their clan, as f'hoods,"
and there is no explanation of
this odd term. We'll let it rest
rightere.
A man who is "airborne all the
way" is the right sort of a guy.
A man who is "real gone" on air-

bornei service, is a fine para
trooper. Standing Soldier
A "leg" is a non-paratrooper,
ho does all his soldiering stand
ing up instead of diving headlong
into the unknown below.
The traditional jump cry of
the paratrooper is "Geronimo."
This was the name of a famous
Apache Indian chief, who was
horse-borne instead of airborne.
You can't prove it, but legend
has it that Apache braves also
cried "Geronimo" when they
leaped from a horse to avoid im
pending disaster.
And to wind things up, it
might be fitting to recite, for
measure good, the classic phrase
of "comfort" that is handed out
to a jumper when he is issued
his first parachute. s
The man who issues these de
vices always is a clown and al
ways he says:
"If it doesn't open, bring it
back and we'll repack it."

Board of Health
Sees End of Polio
Epidemics in State
Portland (U.R) Speculation
that 1955 may be the last polio
epidemic year in Oregon history
has been advanced by the State
Board of Health.
The board based its tentative
prediction on new statistics on
the effectiveness and availabil
ity of Salk vaccine.
No Field Trial Cases
The statistics showed no cases
of polio have been reported this
year among Oregon children
taking part in the 1954 Salk vac
cine field trials who received
booster shots this year.
No cases of polio have been
reported among Oregon first
and second graders receiving
two shots of anti-polio vaccine
this year, and children in the
7-9 age group received one or
more inoculations showed a po
lio incidence one-fifth as great
as children in the same ' age
group who were not inoculated.
To Expand Ago Limits
Dr. Harold Erickson, state
health officer said that enough
commercial vaccine was now
available to provide shots for all
children under 15 years and all
pregnant women. He said the
age limits would be expanded in
coming months.
Dr. Erickson said that be
cause of increasing supplies of
vaccine at least one in every five
persons in Oregon could be pro
tected against polio before the
start of the next polio season.
Doctor, Son, Declared

Haines, Vista, Calif., formerly of

Medford, were found innocent of
trespass in a justice court de
cision here last week. j
A complaint against the two
had been . brought by Louis
Brody, a rancher in the Camp
creek area of Yreka county, but
Justice E. M. Axtell found the
