Quotes From the News

had no gambling in Russia. It is not in the tradition of our people."
American novelist and Nobel Prixe winner Ernest Hemingway

Donald E. Keyhoe, former Marine Corps officer and author of

saucers don't exist: -
"It is an insult to the hundreds of radar operators who have
confirmed that the flying saucers are solid objects, maneuvering
at fantastic speeds under intelligent control."
Dr. Rots T. Mclniyre, the lale President Roosevelt's doctor, on
President Eisenhower's heart attack: '
"President Eisenhower's attack could be attributed more to the
rigorous life he led during the war years and the many weighty
decisions he had to make, always under pressure."
CIO President Walter Reuther, commenting on the appoint

As We Live
Lending Money. Creates
Hard Feeling and Strain
Only in cases of emergency
should you lend money. By do
ing so, you are likely to create
hard feelings and strain friend
ship to the breaking point.
(Q) "I am 18 rears old and
have been going steady for two
years with a boy a year older
to marry him
as soon as he
gets started in
work. We both
graduated from
high school 'in
June and have
Jobs. Now he
often asks me
to lend him
Dr. Her lock money until
the next pay day. Often, I pay
for the gas for his car and for
'movie tickets. He never offers
to pay me back and I hesitate
to remind him that he said he
would pay mo back when he got
his next pay check.
"I don't earn as much as he
does and my parents expect me
to give some money to them
every week as we are a big fam
ily and haven't too much money.
I have been trying to save to buy
things for our home, but I can't
when 1 am always lending mon
ey, to my boy friend. Do you
think .he would be offended if
I asked him to pay me back?
He used to borrow from me
while we were still in school be
cause he knew I earned money
by baby sitting and by working
during vacations."
L.P.T.
(A) I definitely think that you
should ask this boy to return
the money he borrowed from
you and I hope you have kept
an accurate record of the .times
and amounts you lent him so you
can show him exactly what he
owes you. . '
The chances are he would be
both offended and angry if you
asked him to return your mon
ey. But, do you want to con

you an explanation would cer
tainly suggest dishonesty on his
part. You had better think twice
before making any further plans
to marry this boy, either now
or later. A leopard doesn't
change his spots and neither
does a borrower. Could you be
happy married to a man who is
dishonest in money matters, does
not keep promises, and makes
no real effort to live within his
means?

Have just been presented with
a book titled "It Is Easy To Stop
Drinking and Smoking," by one
Ben Sweetland. I appreciate the
spirit in which the gift was sent.
However, I don't want to stop,
either smoking or drinking. I
am still greatly enjoying my
eight cigars a day. Also my one
daily highball (a triple) before
dinner. My belief is that smoking
and drinking in moderation is
an aid to relaxation.
Kissing
. It is repeatedly claimed that so"
called common colds are spread
by kissing. Don't let that dis
courage you, young fellow. Kiss
the object of your affection good
night in the winter just as you
did in the good old summertime.
The chances of catching cold by
kissing are only one in ten.
Asking
Queries from clients: Q. In
what year did Billy Rose win
the national shorthand champion
ship with a speed of 350 vords
per minute?" A. Checking the
situations reveals that Mr. Rose
never won the national short
hand championship for- speed!
Nor did he ever achieve a speed
of 350 words a minute. His top
speed as a working stenographer
was 280 words a minute. The
story about his winning a na
tional championship was a press
agent's dream.
Menu Writers
Should the writers of those
impressive restaurant menus be
given credit? Should these gen
iuses in food description remain
anonymous? One of mv favorite
fancy menu items is this from
the Chicago Blackhawk Restau
rant: "Roast prime ribs of beef
from the cart, roasted in a rock
salt cast to preserve all the delectable-natural
juices."
Literary Note
Were you a follower of the
Frank Merriwell stories? If so,
what was the first name of
Frank's sweetheart? Her ' last
name was Burrage. Was her first
name Inzsror Inez? Was she a
blonde or a brunette? A couple
of New Yorkers ' are having a
heated argument as to this.
All Stars
When discussing musical shows
with "all star" casts don't forget
the Ziegfeld Follies of 1915. This
remarkable show had the follow
ing in its cast: George White,
Ann Pennington, Kay Laurell,
Carl Randall, Leon Errol, Ed
Wynn, Ina Claire, Bert Williams
and W. C. Fields.
Horses and Women '
It can truly be said of women:
"By their hats you shall know
them.". The most intelligent
women wear hats regularly. Fe
males who are slightly on the
dull side mentally are likely to
habitually go hatless. The ex
tent of a. woman's intelligence
can also be judged by her choice
of hats. If the hat fits her face
and is worn at a slight angle the
wearer is usually very 'smart
If a woman wears a hat that
does not fit her face, and wears
it flat on her head you can be
certain she is not especially
bright. .
