Politicians Exaggerating Plight of Nation's Farmers Benson Declares
Storm Deliberately
Kicked Up Without
Cause, Is Claim

exaggerating the plight of the
nation's farmers.
Benson, central figure in the
controversy about farm policies,
declining farm income, prices
of farm produce, and the new
pork purchase program, asserted
that politicians are deliberatly
kicking up a storm without
cause. . i
"The farm program now in
operation is the result of a year's
tudy and was adopted on a bi
partisan basis," Benson said in
an interview with United Press.
"A farm program should not
serve partisan political purposes.
"Yet a determined effort is un
derway to paint the picture
blacker than it really is.
Not Helping' Farmers
"Some politicians are not help
ing farmers much by their com
ments." He answered with a grin only
when asked if he-thought those
persons who advocate a return
to 90 per cent of parity price
supports should shut up. Advo
cates of 90 per cent of parity say
it would jack up farm income.
Criticism of the administra
tion's farm program has been
severe. Benson has been pres
sured by high ranking politicians
of both parties, farmers and
farm groups in the Midwest, and
others to do something about the
economic situation of farmers.
An indication of the severity
of the pressure was the an
nouncement late Wednesday that
Benson had cancelled a trip to
Europe: He had planned to leave
next month to make a personal
on-the-spot study of markets for
U.S. surplus commodities in Eu
rope and also was to deliver a
speech before the Foods and Ag
ricultural Organization of the
United Nations in Rome,.
Convinced Program Sound
Benson is convinced the farm
program is sound.
He is convinced the present
flexible support policy is cor
rect and that farmers realize its
correctness. He thinks .the vot
ers next year will agree to its
soundness.
"A price support policy of 90
per cent of parity is a bankrut
program," Benson said. "It never
did a good job." .
Ha said high, rigid suports
stimulate excessive production,
build up huge surpluses, and
cause farm commodities to be
priced out of the market. Flex
ile supports, he said, will stop
this by bringing production into
line with demand.
"We are right about the pork
purchase program announced
oMonday," Benson said. "It will
offer help to the farmers. The
timing was good. It will give
good returns .for the money
spent."
Young Pianist Gets
Praise for Concert
At MHS Auditorium
Medford Active club offered
Medford music lovers a treat
last night in the form of a con
cert by a fine young pianist, but
only a few availed themselves
of the opportunity. The artist, a
young woman of West Indian
descent, played to an almost
empty house at Medford Senior
High school. ,
Miss. Mary Hill, who drew
comments of "utterly charming"
and "exceptionally pleasing"
from those who did attend, dis
played much poise, as well as
line musiciansnip, lor one so
young. She opened her program
with a Bach fugue, bringing out
the rich full tones of this com
poser's music. Her talent was
equally displayed in Handel's
"Variations in E Major," which
she gave its full melodious value,
Substitute Number
The artist substituted a Straus
number for one by Beethoven,
saying she felt she could not do
. justice to the latter when play
ing in an almost empty-auditorium.
Her middle group of . num
bers were less frequently heard
compositions of Gershwin and
Debussy, and she closed her pro
gram with three Chopin num
bers, the "Scherzo" being parti
cularly outstanding. Liszt and
Chopin numbers were played for
encores.
. Miss Hill's program, complete
ly unhackneyed, was played
with vitality and authority and
deserved to be heard-by a much
larger audience. Those who did
hear Miss Hill went back stage,
en masse, to meet and compli
ment her on the excellence of
the evening's music.-

Princess Margaret Calls on Archbishop of Canterbury

garet called today on the Arch
bishop of Canterbury, Episcopal
head of the Established Church
of England. The visit aroused
immediate speculation that she
had gone to ask for guidance
about her romance with Peter
Townsend.
The primate of the Church of
of England received Margaret
shortly after 3 p.m. in what
could be one of the most dra
matic developments in the ro
mance of the Princess and the
pilot.
Margaret drove in a royal lim
ousine from Clarence House to
Lambeth Palace, the official
London residence of the arch
bishop. Eden Ducks Answer
Margaret's visit lasted not
quite an hour. She went directly
home to Clarence House. ,
While she was in session with
the archbishop, the government
again ducked giving an answer
in Parliament to a question
Frost Lingers
In Southland

A frosty cold snap lingered
in the southland today and
floods plagued the Pacific
Northwest. - '
In marked contrast, a forest
fire raged out of control in Mon
tana woodlands and wide areas
of: the nation enjoyed Indian
summer. .
The southern chill relaxed a
little after spreading a general
frost from Mississippi to the
Carolinas. ' But local areas were
still, in danger of more frost,
with Tuscaloosa, Ala., thermome
ters registering 37 degrees and
New Orleans 41.
In the state of Washington,
meanwhile, a 150-foot rip in the
bank of a fresh water slough
sent flood waters pouring' over
1000 acres of low-lying land
near Mount Vernon.
The flood halted harvesting of
broccoli crops and the weather
bureau predicted rain for the
next two days.
Rain was a sorely needed
commodity in Montana, where
a forest fire blazed out of control
across about 2000 acres in the
Lewis and Clark National For
est. The fire was apparently
started by a carelessly thrown
cigarette and it leap-frogged
across Half-Moon Pass towards
the Lewistown watershed.
Japanese Defense Budget
Asks Military Increase
Tokyo (U.R) The Japan
ese Defense Board submitted to
the finance minister today a bud
get calling for a 21,000-man in
crease in the nation's military
forces during fiscal 1956.
To pay for the increase, the
defense board asked the finance
ministry for $287,000,000, a hike
of $45,830,000 from the amount
allotted for defense during fis
cal 1955.

Gang Saw Installed
At Mistletoe Mill '
Ashland Installation of a
Marathon gang saw, recently
completed at the Mistletoe
Wholesale company's sawmill,
will provide a manufacturing
outlet for small logs formerly
sent to mills in White City.
The new saw, first of its type
in the Ashland area, will in
crease production of the Mistle
toe mill by about one third, ac
cording to Arthur M. Peters,
president of the wholesale com
pany and owner of the Mistletoe
planing mill.
Installation of the saw re
quired remodeling of the mill
building. Total cost was approxi
mately $25,000.
Gang saws can profitably
handle logs down to a six-inch
diameter at the top. "The new
Marathon gang saw will result
in far more efficient handling of
the logs," Peters said. "There
will be less waste and more
boards cut out of every log."
iThe Mistletoe operation,
which employs' about 50 men,
has logs enough on hand to en
able them to operate during the
winter without shutdown, Peters
stated.
Marilyn Monroe's
Divorce

riage of Marilyn Monroe and Joe
DiMaggio ended officially today,
and the blonde star said she had
no plans for remarriage to any
one. Miss Monroe filed for divorce j

oniy nine months after she and '
DiMaggio were married. She
said her husband had treated her j
with "coldness and indiffer
ence." She and DiMaggio are both in
Manhattan now, but going sep
arate ways. Marilyn is busy
studying serious acting at the

ling his personal investments.
They haven't been seen out to
gether since June 1, when Di
Maggio gave a party for Mar
ilyn's 29th birthday.
"I have no time for that now,"
Marilyn said, referring to any
new romance. She livs now in

ference today that Stevenson "is
a stronger candidate" than New
York Gov. Averell Harriman.
But Leader added immediately
that he is not committed to any

sort. The Guardian criticized sen
sational . press coverage of the
affair but admitted that "the
royal family's 'public relations'
have been very badly mishan
dled and that a great deal of the
unpleasant invasion of personal
privacy has come because of the
ineptitude of the royal advisers
