pire blasting ex-manager of the

as a television
executive and
now is a sub
dued man.

17 years and moved into NBCv
TV as "an ambassador of good
will."
Durocher now is established
in a fancy office at NBC, so I
dropped in to see whether he
had sent George Gobel to the
showers yet or traded "Medic"
for "I Love Lucy."
Durocher a Changed Man
But Durocher insists that for
TV he's a changed man.
, He will bawl out no network
vice presidents as he did um
pires. He will not quibble with
the ratings but "leave those
things up to the performers."
"It's just like a ball game,"
murmured the executive from
behind the large desk. "You're
in the clubroom, you're beat.
That's like the ratings. Nothing
you can do about it. Next time
you try to get the ratings higher.
There'll be no screaming from
me."
The new executive has been
put to work at a variety of jobs.
He first will appear without his
baseball team in a comedy skit
with George Gobel Nov. 12.
Then he's due for guest spots
on three other shows. He'll also
announce sidelights on 20 sports
telecasts, such as the Rose Bowl
game.-
Speaker at Banquets
Another duty he acquired in
his switch from diamonds to
dialogue is to give speeches at
banquets (that's where the "good
will" comes in) and dig up new
talent for the network.
"Like on the ball field. You
see a player who looks good, you
sign him. Same with actresses
and comedians now," he reflected.
But finding talent for TV
will be easier than scouting ball
players. Nothing tougher than
that."
fessional baseball is o.k. for peo
ple who ro honest work or get
enougn general exercise every
day, but, in my opinion, it is not
good or healthful recreation for
people who live by their wits
students, white collar workers,
professional people, business people.
These "brain" workers need
recreation which will enable
them to "let off steam". The con
ventions of business, professional
and social life make it necessary
for one to restrain or repress
natural impluses. The emotion
al excitment or tension one gets
at critical moments in the ball
game cannot be aooeased or re
lieved by just sitting on one's
fanny and screamme or even
rising and shaking a fist at the
wuijiie.
Football, both Drofessional and
"big game," is not iust not eood
for most spectators, but the
emotional excitment and tension
the battle builds up in the grand-

friends, as training in courage,
manhood, endurance, self-re
liance, sportsmanship, etc. Un
fortunately for many growing
boys, fathers who are susceptible
to the influene of the local
sporting gentry aje likeiy to
permit and even urge boys in
the early 'teens to try to make
the team. I have described in
