Evans Valley Club
Hears Program on
Dry Arrangements
Rogue River Highlighting
the October meeting of Evans
Valley Garden club was the talk
on "Dry fcirangements" giver
by Mrs. John Goldt. She out
lined the entire proceedure from
harvesting the material to the
iinished product. When picking
the plants, strip all foliage from
them, then hang upside down in
a cool, dark place to cure. Con
tainers best suited to this type
of arrangement are of brass,
copper, pewter or pottery; or
hollowed out gourds or hard
shelled squash. Color may be
added by dying the weeds. The
arrangement Mrs. Goldt dis
played was of cattails, teasel,
milkweed pod? and queen anne's
ls.ee, with dogwood leaves add
ed for color, all placed in a cop
per foil covered container.
Mrs. Thomas Mauchlive show
ed an interesting arrangement
made from various kitchen
spices.
In reporting the Siskiyou Dis
trict meeting recently held in
Eagle Point, the delegates, Mrs.
John Goldt, Mrs. Thomas Mauch
line and Mrs. Harry Winters, all
ttressed the value of every pos
sible member attending these
meetings where experts on dif
ferent phases of gardening are
heard.
Roll call was answered with
material or interesting weeds,
including comments on their
habits and varied names.
At this meeting, Mrs. Ellouise
Counts was welcomed back to
the community and to the club
ts a new member.
The next meeting was set for
November 30 at the W. M.
Stringer home with Mrs. Mauch
line as co-hostess with Mrs.

Relatives Visit
In Medford Home
A group of relatives have been
guests at the home of Mrs. John
Wilkinson, 726 South Keeneway
drive, in recent days. Here were
her son-in-law and daughter, Mr.
and Mrs. R. H. MacLauchlan,
Eugene, another daughter, Miss
Dolores Wilkinson, a service
club director at Ft. Lewis, Wash.,
and Mrs. Wilkinson's brother-in-law
and sister, Mr. and Mrs.'
Thoman Bickerstaff of Califor
nia. The MacLauchlans spent the
week end here, the Bickerstaffs
left Monday and Miss Wilkinson
Tuesday morning.
Mrs. Wilkinson's son, Donald
T. Wilkinson, an airman first
class in the United States Air
Force, is spending the week with
his mother. The.young man is as
signed to duty at Portland Inter
national Air base. ' ,

doll goes a story the child can
read.
Their first doll came out las',
year and was an immediate hit.
It sold through toy shops and
department stores. This year,
their second doll they plan one
design each year is a bride
with paper hair, satin naner
dress, but real tulle veil and real
ribbon sash. She will be sold by
mail order only.
Works At Home ,
"We iust decided th nnlv
way we can keep this business
from getting too bis is to Vwn
it direct mail," said Mrs. Tier-
nan. ..-
. Mrs. Tiernan, who does all her
own housework, cuts and assem
bles the doll parts and ward
robes in "my studio" one room
of her house. Miss McKenna
works either at her office after
hours or her home in Bronx
ville, N. Y., giving the profes
sional touch to drawings and
painting the dresses and doll
features.
Mrs. Tiernan. a native of Oma
ha, Neb., said that, "Eighteen or
years ago, i studied puppetry
and modeled papier-mache dolls.
I also took costume design. .So all
my training just fitted this doll
business."
She first made doll wardrobes
of real fabrics and sold F. A. O.
Schwarz, the famous New York
toy store.
Sold Shop
Eventually she opened a doll
repair shop in White Plains, and
specialized in restoration of val
uable antique dolls for dealers.
"The shop got to be full-time,
so I sold it," she said.
"But I'd had that idea of
paper dolls for a long time . . .
now seemed a good time to go
to work on it."
The women started with $500
capital and "made money right
from the beginning," said Mrs.
Tiernan. But the profit has been
plowed back into production as
orders multiplied.
Mrs. Tiernan advised any
woman planning to start a proj
ect to seek professional advice
before spending capital.
"I took a sample of my doll
kit to the woman's program,"
she said. "They gave me a lot of
guidance." She referred to the
woman's program of the New
York State Department of Com
merce. The program, only one of
its kind in the nation, specializes
in helping women with problems
of pricing, registry of name, in
surance, expansion and distribu
tion of their products.
