Engineer Salaries
Continue To Increase
: Chicago .U.R) Starting
salaries for beginning engineers
are continuing to increase, ac
cording to figures compiled by
Earl C. Kubicek, director of
placement for Illinois Institute
of Technology. .
The figures show that the
starting pay of the 1955 June
engineering graduate with a
bachelor of science degree
climbed to $381 per month, com
pared to the $363 received by
the 1954 June graduate.
The latest figure represents a
decline from the all-time high of
$383 received by the 1955 Janu
ary engineering class. But, Ku
bicek Said, the difference in the
size of classes and other factors
accounted t for the invariably
higher starting wage received by
mid-year graduates.
Kubipek said averages, based
on the starting, salaries of com
bined June and January classes
at IIT, have increased every year
since 1949, when the average
was $282 per month.

Penally Charge
Urged on Railroads
Salem (U.R) The govern
or's emergency transportation
committee will urge Congress to
pass a law allowing the Inter
state Commerce commission to
charge penalty rental rates
against railroads which have to
use cars of other lines because
they do not build cars of their
own.
The committee, meeting here
yesterday, , authorized Lloyd C.
Mason, Oregon Farm Bureau
Federation representative, to
represent it at a meeting next
Monday of the U. S. Senate Ag
ricultural committee.
The committee also wants : a
penalty for railroads which do
not repair cars fast enough. And
shippers who hold cars more
than 72 hours would be penaliz
ed by the ICC under the propos
ed program. . . j
The committee opposed any
effort by eastern railroads to ob
tain a larger share of receipts
from transcontinental freight
shipments. Clifford W. Ferguson,
counsel, said if the eastern rail
roads are successful, Southern
Pacific Company's revenue
would be cut 50 per cent which
he said would prevent SP from
building more cars.

Mrs. Lillian Sloan, director of
the institute, said a survey
among 10,000 home owners re
vealed that more than 73 per
cent were dissatisfied with their
TV antenna leads.
Many persons, she said, com
plained of the necessity of re
placing the lead 'every1 three or
four years, due to the wearing
of insulation.
Others objected . to the un
sightly appearance of the an
tenna lead draped down the side
of the house, and the necessity
of running it around the room
inside.
Stockmen Directors
To Discuss Program
Directors of the Jackson
County Stockmen's association
will meet Nov. 1, at 8 p.m. in
the county agent's office at the
courthouse.
The possibility of a state live
stock commission will be dis
cussed at the meeting as will a
suggested program of work for
the association.
Included in the work program
will be plans ior grazing im
provement, such as reseeding,
water development, drift fences
and other related subjects, ac
cording to county agent W. B.
Tucker. . .
A date will also be set next
Tuesday for the annual meeting
of the association.

HEU Provide Many
Services To Area
Cooperative extension work
in Jackson county is a public
service available to anyone who
wishes information about agri
culture, horticulture, livestock,
or home economics, according to
Joanne Weatherford, acting
county home economics agent.
Home extension units are
comprised of groups of people
who want to participate in the
educational ; type programs of
fered by the extension service.
These units are open to anyone
in the county who wishes to join,
Mrs. Weatherford said. , .
Courses now being offered by
the extension service . include
basket weaving, gift wrapping,
main dish meals, and a color in
the home workshop. Anyone in
terested in taking part should
call the Jackson county service.
Mrs. Weatherford stated.
Pamphlets giving information
about a wide variety of subjects,
from diseases of plants and ani
mals to "What to do when your
home freezer stops" are avail
able, free to the public, at the
county agent's office.
Talks Continue
To Head Off Strike
Portland (U.R) Federal Me
diator Bob McClelland met again
today with, union and company
representatives in an attempt to
head off a threatened strike by
some 500 employees of the Pa
cific Telephone and Telegraph
Company in Oregon.
The old contract expired last
week but both sides agreed to an
extention until Oct; 31. Today's
meeting was a joint affair. Mc
Clelland met separately with
each side yesterday. '

Roseburg Man Hurt
In One-Car Accident
Oregon City U.R) A 45-year-old
Roseburg man was in
critical condition at a local hos
pital today with injuries receiv
ed in a one-car accident on high
way 99E yesterday.
Robert W. Foye was injured
when his automobile hit a slick
stretch of pavement near Auro
ra, just north of the Pudding
river bridge. His car went out of
control and into a ditch.
Colleges May
Limit Admissions
' Portland (U.RV Chancellor
John Richards told the closing
session of a State Board of
Higher Education meeting here
yesterday that Oregon colleges
may have to limit . admission to
the upper two-thirds of high
school graduates and reduce the
number of out-of-state students.
The possibility of selective ad
missions loomed, Richards said,
because of the anticipated dou
bling of college enrollments in
the next SVz years.
He said Oregon's problem was
made more difficult because the
state had no junior colleges and
relatively few private schools.
The board announced the ap
pointment of Dr. Charles D.
Byrne, former chancellor, as
head of the Napal contract Dr.
Byrne will spend some two years
in Napal helping establish higher
education facilities at a base
salary of $10,000 per year.
Also announced was the au
thorization of preliminary plans
for the first unit of a new dormi
tory at Eastern Oregon College
of Education at a cost not to ex
ceed $400,000.

Pulp Mill To Be
Built ai Toledo
Portland (U.R) Georgia-Pacific
Plywood Company has an
nounced tentative plans for con
struction of a pulp mill at To
ledo, which is the. center of the
firm's large timber holdings, in
western Oregon. '
" Owen R. Cheatham, G-P
president, also reaffirmed the
company's intentions for con
struction of a pulp mill at Ju
neau in southeast Alaska. The
company recently obtained 500;
000 acres of timber near Juneau
from the federal government.
Cheatham said Georgia-Pacific
was considering blending the
hemlock-spruce pulp from the
Alaskan mill witn the fir pulp
from the proposed Toledo plant.
The Alaska mill would produce
500 tons of pulp daily, and the
Toledo mm 250-tons.
The G-P official said the To
ledo site had available a con
tinuing source of power, water
and wood waste. Main problem
to be solved was the shallowness
of the Yaquina Bay channel to
Toledo, but Cheatham said army
engineers were reported to have
plans to deepen the channel.1
