POOR PARENTS PREFERRED
One of the gruelling features
of this sinecure is having to sit
here at my desk mooning over
the immediate and remote reper
cussions likely to occur if I say
what I want to say in the way I
want to say it while 5 minutes
away 70 or 80 loafers are hap
pily gamboling on the bowling
green, this beautiful, bright,
balmy autumn afternoon. This
sad thought leads to another,
namely, why
Why should I have to work,
work, work every day like this
when all the other old geezers
are free to go out to play?
That leads to still another
thought, which runs like this:
Areyou kidding? You call it
work batting out seven columns
a week, 52 weeks a year, in
every year since Topsy was a
colt?
No, I have to admit, I can't
call that part of it anything but
fun.
Well, then, just what am I
crying obout?
, I do have three afternoons a
week on the green, the year
around, except the three weeks
or so when it rains.
Then I revert to the golden
days of boyhood on Chapel
Street in Canandaigua the gold-

Contest Planned
Portland The eighth annual
national essay contest on em
ployment of the physically han
dicapped, open to all high school
juniors and seniors, is now under
way. The contest is sponsored
each year by the President's com
mittee on employment of the
physically handicapped and co
operating governors' committees.
Deadline for entering essays
is Feb. 10, 1956.
The title of this year's essay
is "Independence for the Handi
capped Through Employment."
National prizes are $1,000 for
first; $400, second; $300, third;
$200, fourth, and $100 for fifth.
The five prize winners also re
ceive an expense-free trip to
Washington, D. C.
In Oregon, prizes will be giv
en to winners in bonds with $100
to first, $50 'to second, and $25
each to third, fourth and fifth.
The essay winning first place in
Oregon will -be entered in the
national contest.
The U. S. Department of Ag
riculture is considering proposed
revisions of the official U. S.
standards for grades of slaughter
barrows and gilts, and barrow
and gilt carcasses. .

did from three or four terms of

I say I feel a little ashamed be
cause I know father would shake
his head sadly and say "My boy,
you should thank the Lord that
you are in a position to do so
much good for so many ..."
That's what Hippocrates would
say too.

trying to help other parents like
my parents parents whose
wealth is invested in and whose
lives are devoted to their chil
dren. Come to think of it, no job,

would be as dreadful as the void
into which a man goes if . on
reaching a certain age or stage
of life he quits work and has
nothing to do. There should be
a law.
