Two Events Mark Observance
Of United Nations Week Here
Medford chapter of Oregon
United Nations association will
plant a giant Sequoia tree on
the grounds of Hedrick Junior
high school today in commemor
ation of the 10th anniversary of
United Nations. The event is a
part of the week long obser
vance of the anniversary being
held here, and is set for 1:30 p.m.
The public is invited to attend.
The Rev. Thomas McCamant
of First Congregational church
will deliver the invocation for
the commemorative program
and Vincent Bevis, give a wel
coming .talk.
Bruce Manley, president of
the UN chapter here, will intro
duce Gregory Elliot, 10, chosen
to represent children born in
1945, year of the UN charter
signing. Gregory is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Don Elliot, 2671
Elliot street.
Representing Mayor Earl Mil
ler at the ceremony will be
Councilman Harold Frye, who
will read the mayor's proclam
ation concerning United Nations
day in Medford.
Mrs. Herbert Sampert, chair
man5 in charge of arranging the
ceremony, states that the Se
quoia was chosen after consulta
tion with the school architect,
foresters and horticulturists. She
points out that this type of tree
grows to be the largest of all
living trees and is said to be
immune to damage by disease or
insects.

Tomorrow Oak Grove school
will observe UN day with a pro
gram, a special luncheon at noon
and speakers. Among the visitors
will be Mrs. George Flanagan,
who visited several German fam
ilies last summer and Mrs. Erna
Warrelman, who will tell Ger
man folk stories. Mrs. Flanagan
will display an international
doll cellection. Other guests will
be Miss Judy Raphorst, student
from the Netherlands at South
ern Oregon college, and Miss
Michelle Ollivier, Vannes, France,
who is studying liberal arts at
SOC under a Fullbright schol
arship arranged with the Ore
gon State Board of Higher Ed
ucation. Children of the school will
sing a group of songs from many
lands under the direction of
Hugh Shurtleff.
The luncheon, with a turkey
menu, will be served to the en
tire study body at one time, ra
ther than in shifts, as is usually
done. Decorations will be in the
UN theme, with each child re
ceiving a miniature flag from
one of the UN nations to keep
as a memento of the event.

Gold Hill Miss Marilyn Anne
Harzitt and Gene Melvin Depuy,
were married in rites October 14
at Hope Presbyterian church.
The double ring ceremony was
read at 8 o'clock in the evening
by the' Rev. D. F. Barnett.
The bride is a daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Frank Williamson,
route 1, box 454, Gold Hill. The
bridegroom, now a student at
Southern Oregon college, is a
son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred De-'
puy, Rogue River.
Mr. Williamson gave his
daughter in marriage. The bride
wore a light . blue tweed suit
with navy blue accessories and
her corsage was of pink orchids.
Her jewelry included a cameo
pin which belooged to her great
great-grandmother.
Mrs. Cummings wore a pink
suit dress with black accessories
and a green orchid corsage.
Glen Depuy was best man for
his brother and Bill Milton seat
ed the guests.
The church was decorated
with chrysanthemums in a va
riety of shades.
Fellowship hall at the church
was scene of the reception. Mrs.
Marion Gamash served the wed
ding cake and coffee and Mrs.
Doris Gibson poured the punch.
Out-of-town guests included
Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Williamson,
Yermo, Calif., and Mrs. E. W.
Elbert, Sacramento, Calif., rela
tives of the bride, and Mr.-and
I Mrs. O. M. Depuy, Tule Lake,
relatives of the bridegroom..
Both the bride and bridegroom
are graduates of Rogue River
High school.

Norling was wedded to Jack L.
Turk in evening rites October 8
at 8:30 o'clock at the home of
Mrs. Darold Garman, route 2,
box 3771, Medford, the bride
groom's mother. Dr. Jouett Bray,
retired Methodist minister, per
formed the ceremony.
The bride is a daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. William Norling
of Butte Falls. The bridegroom
attended Medford Senior high
school and was graduated from
Sacramento High school. He is
employed in Sacramento with
the Sutter Box company and the
couple will make their home in
the California city. The bride
attended Butte Falls High school.
The bride, given in marriage
by her grandfather, Knute El
lesson,' wore a pale pink linen
suit and her corsage was of
white gladiolus.
Miss Eleanore Sheppard, the
bridesmaid, wore a green knit
suit and her flowers were pink
gladiolus.
Lee Abbott was best man and
Jerry Garman, brother of the
bridegroom, lighted the candles.
The rooms were decorated
with baskets of red and white
gladiolus and tapers in candel
abra. , The reception which followed
was held at the Garman home
and was given by the bride's
mother and Mrs. Garman. Mrs.
Elmo Elleson, an aunt of the
bride, cut the cake. Miss Shirley
Turk, a sister of the bridegroom,
and Mrs. Garman, served.
The bride s mother wore a
rose colored suit and Mrs. Gar-
man's frock was of pink and
grey faille.
The couple made their wed
ding trip to Sacramento.
Speaker Explains
Use of Braille
Mrs. W. N. Wycoff of Ashland
gave a program concerning the
Braille system of reading and
writing for blind persons during
a meeting of Wednesday Study
club last week at the Girls Com
munity club.
Mrs. Wyckoff lost her sight
about seven years ago.
Mrs. C. W. Mitchell gave a
travelog and Mrs. G. B. Canode
spoke to the group.
The next meeting will be No
vember 2.
