Jury has set $e death penalty
lor Otto Austin Loel, former
Sandy, Ore., police chief for the
hunting knife slaying of a Cali
fornia woman.
Judge A. P. Van Meter, who
will sentence Loel Tuesday, said
he has not decided on the date
of execution. Oklahoma law
stipulates that the date must be
"not less than 60 days nor more
than 90 days from the date of
lentencing."
The body of Mrs. Elizabeth
Jeanne Henderson, 31, was
found in a motel here on Jan. 12,
154. Her body bore 19 stab
wounds and was covered with
cigaret Churns. She had been
slain two days earlier.
Nabbed in Florida
Loel, on the FBI's 10 most
vanted list, was arrested almost
a year later in Florida.
Loel at first pleaded insanity.
But during his three-day trial he
maintained he was defending
himself from a perverted sex at
tack by the woman. He said he
'went haywide" and did not
know h& was stabbing Mrs. Hen
derson until she .was dead.
Assistant Oklahoma County
Attorney Joe Martin Jr. said
Loel killed the woman in a "fit
of passion." He also suggested
that Loel could have been the
pervert..

led for at least eight days a pos
sible strike of some 5,000 PT&T
workers in Oregon.
The present contract between
the two groups was due to ex
pire at midnight Sunday, but
bargaining committees have
signed a memorandum agree
ment extending the contract un
til midnight, Oct. 31.
Meet Monday
The agreement further pro
vides that the contract may be
terminated upontwo days writ
ten notice after Oct. 31. The
i two groups will meet next Mon
day morning for another bap
gaining session. ,
The CIO union made its first
specific wage demands from the
company, asking raises ranging
from $3.50 to $6.00 per week. A,
company spokesman termed the
demand "unrealistic and uaac-
ceptable."
Since negotiating sessions be
gan Sept. 19 the union had asked
for a "reasonable wage in
crease" and improvements in
certain working conditions. The
company had offered increases
of $2 to $3.50 weekly.

A piggy bank containing more
than $100 in coins was taken
Friday night from the home of

tel, Cabin 6, 816 North River
side ave., according to city po
lice. The victim reported that she
had lost the key to her cabin
while shopping Oct. 17.'The lost
key bore a descriptive postal
return tag.
Police believe that the cabin
was entered between 6:30 and
11 p.m? by someone with a key,
who took the white porcelain
piggy bank from a dresser. The
doer was locked after them.

The department issued the new
statement in the face of heated
denials by the three senators
that they had asked for special
flights by two large Air Force
transports to return them to the
United States. The special flights
will cost the Air Force more
than $20,000.
,The three senators, who have
been touring Europe and the
Middle East to check on defense
spending, are Democrats John L.
McClennan (Ark.), John Stennis
(Miss.) and Dennis Chavez (N.-
M.).
The Defense Department, ad
mitting there has been "some
misunderstanding" about the
senators' trip, sought to "clarify
the matter" with a "chronology
of what happened."

The chronology showed that
the Defense Department escort
officer accompanying the sen
ators had been advised before
the senators Jeft this country on
Sept. 20 that Stennis and Mc
Clellan desired to leave from
Madrid on Oct. 23 and Chavez
from Paris on Nov. 3.
The statement said that, "The
senators were advised that a way
would be found to make suitable
air transportation available on
those dates."
On Oct. 10, when the senators
were in Europe, the department
said, a message was sent to the
Defense Department escort of
ficer Col. Ralph J. Watson, stat
ing that aircraft in Europe on
other missions would be avail
able to pick up Stennis and Mc
Clellan in Madrid dh Oct. 25 and
Chavez in Paris on Nov. 6.
Requested Check
, The message asked Watson to
"determine if these arrange
ments satisfactory." The message
continued:
"If these arrangements satis
factory, it will not be necessary
to send two aircraft" from the
United States to pick up the sen
ators. On Oct. 16, the department
said, a message was received
from Watson stating: ". .. . Pro
posed plan not acceptable. Pro
ceed with original schedule."
In "compliance with its orig
inal commitment to the commit
tee to provide suitable air trans
portation for these parties on
Oct 23 and Nov. 3," the depart
ment said, the Air Force ordered
two planes to leave from this
country to pick up the senatorial
parties.

24-year-old Oregon soldier was
killed Saturday when the car he
was driving went out of control
on a curve and rolled over on
U.S. Highway 40 about 22 miles
west of here.
The victim was Corp. Bob

ave., Grants Pass, Ore. A pass
enger in the vehicle, Pvt. Glen
J. Jellcoat, of Charleston, S.C.,
was taken to Roosevelt hospital
with serious injuries.
