G
Martin and Lewis 'Give Away' Nearly
$75,000 At Las Vegas Baefcack Table
Las Vegas, Nev. U.R) Jer
ry Lewis and Dean Martin,
clowns an and off the
screen, took over a blackjack
table in a swank resort here
and "gave away" almost $75,000
during a 35-minute period, the
hotel said today.
The money, said a spokesman
for the Sands hotel, came from
the coffers of the resort's casino.
Martin and Lewis did not use
their own cash on the give-away
spree.
"That $75,000 is nothing com
pared to the $2,000,000 in good
will the boys just made for the
Sands with the public," said Jack
Entratter, one of the hotel's own
ers. ThpJ team recently patched up
a feud. They came here Sunday
night for a brief vacation. While
waiting yesterday for a car to
take them to the airport and the
return flight to Hollywood, on
a plane which had been delayed.
Martin and Lewis sat at an un
occupied blackjack (21) card
table.
I "At first they were just play
fully dealing cards to kill time,"
said Entratter.
' Your Deal
! Hotel visitors sDotted them
and started crowding around the
table. Some joined in the game.
Lewis, rubber-faced clown of the
act, set himself up as dealer.
Martin took over the money tray
which contained silver dollars
and S25 and S5 chips. Soon it be
came apparent that Lewis was
running a different sort of game.
The customer was always right
and always won, no matter what
cards he held.
Martin and Lewis kept peek
ing at cards of players and advis
ing if they should stop or draw.
Lewis berated players who did
not heed his tips. Players who
legitimately had better hands
than Lewis were paid two to
four times the winnigs to which
they were entitled. More than
100 persons crowded around the
table which seated six.
Martin and Lewis kept mak
ing players give seats to other
persons. "I guess they wanted
to spread it around," said hotel
press agent Al Freeman.
Money Flows
For 35 minutes the wheeling
and dealing with the players
always winning continued.
Freeman said the entertainers
went through almost five full
trays of chips, each tray contain
ing $15,000. The exact cost to the
casino was $74,895, Freeman
said.
Entratter watched the game
throughout. He was smiling, too,
particularly when the com
edians' agent, Mack Gray, pull
ed them from-the table to take a
car to the airport.
'"Just think of the goodwill,"
said Entratter. "Of course, we're
awfully lucky the plane final
ly arrived. Six hours of this
could be almost financially em
harassing." .
A hotel spokesman, who refus
ed to permit use of his name,
said that the $75,000 the boys
handed out was "nothing" com
pared to the amount of business
they drew into the hotel merely
by being there for three days.

BY FRANK JENKINS
As mentioned here before,
the underlying philosophy of
the California State park system
is to make more easily available
to the people of a state that is
growing more rapidly than any
ether state of the Union, whose
cities are spreading out over
the surrounding countryside at
a rate that is nothing less than
amazing, the majesty and the
beauty of the great outdoors.
It is an inspiring philosophy.
It is a REASONABLE philos
ophy. The beauties of nature
have an uplifiting quality. They
tend to raise man up out of
his pettier moods. We can stand
beside a rushing, clear river or
a placid lake or in the presence
of a shining snowpeak or in
the awesome shadows of a red
wood forest, with the sunshine
filtering down through the
mighty trees without thinking
better thoughts and planning
better deeds?
Few of us. indeed.
TOUT
Man is a strange animal.
For example:
TN THE heart of the" lovely
Humbolt Redwoods state park,
there is a new and shiny plaque
'Commemorating the gift of a
million dollars by John D. Rock
efeller to the Save the Redwoods
League, whose efforts have been
responsible in a large way for
the preservation of so many I
thousands of acres of these mag-!
nificent trees for the enjoyment !
of future generations. !
The reason for the new and ,
shiny plaque is that a year or j
so ago some character with a ;
high-powered rifle stood in front j
of the old plaque, there in the
shadow of these spirit-uplifiting
giants, and shot it so full of
holes that it looked more like
a colander than a commemor
ative inscriotion.
The pattern of the bullet holes
indicated that he wasn't even
using it for a target to sharpen
up his marksmanship. He was
just DESTROYING something. .
TJERE'S another one for the
"book:
Not too long ago, a' party of
people camped for the night in
one of these parks in the heart
of the great outdoors. Thev
bought a standard package of
fuel at the park headquarters
and with it they cooked their
evening meal. As the shades of
night fell, they wanted the
cheering light of a fire as who
does'nt, out in the big woods.
But they didn't want to buy
any more fuel. So they took axes
and went to the building that
houses the shower baths for the
use of public and chopped down
a couple of the partitions and
used the wreckage to replenish
their fire.
It takes all kinds of people
to make a world.
TN MENDOCINO county, south
of the heavier growths of red
woods, there is a tiny creek be
side Highway 101. It is a pleas
ant little trickle running
between green banks. Beside it
is a soda spring. . People bring
lemons there to make lemonade
with this nature's bounty of
sparkling water. For all I know,
they may bring firewater to
make highballs, but that is be
side the point. I
The point is that between the
creek and the . road there is a
little . flat beneath a spreading
tree an ideal wayside stopping
place. The rubbish and litter in
the - little flat are bad enough,
but when you look over the
bank, down toward the creek,
you get the full Jolt. . ,
It is a mass of discarded paper.
melon rinds,
paper cartons
chicken bones,
and . everything
that people throw away.
PEOPLE, taken as a whole,
r are WONDERFUL.
but there are strange and in
comprehensible individuals
among us.

Boxcar Shortage Idles Westfir Mill
Eugene U.R) The boxcar
-shortage has forced the layoff
of about 75 men at the Edward
Hines Lumber company at West

would not be rehired until more
cars are received. , -
The spokesman said the com
pany was receiving only about
30 per cent of the cars needed
to handle shipments.
The Hines mill, which em
ploys about 320 men, said log
ging operations were not affect
ed by the car shortage.
