doing a "lousy job" protecting i
their students from accidents, j
safety expert said today. i
David L. Arm, director of in-
dustrial safety for the National
Safety Council, said a recent 11
QoUege survey revealed that one ;
student in nine was injured dur
ing the past school year and j
one injured student in 11 was
hospitalized.
Arm told the National Safety
Congress "there are only a few :
colleges and universities which
recognize the value of develop- i
ing in their students the state
of mind which enables them to
accept the industrial safety
methods and regulations com
panies require."
He proposed that safety be ,
made an integral part of all
. college activities. But he oppos- i
ed teaching courses devoted to
safety because "the typical atti- '.
tude of students toward any
course is that it is something
to be completed and then is gone
and forgotten forever."

Noise Reduction
Conference Opens

conference opened today to fo
cus businessmen's attention on
how to reduce noise in offices
and plants.
Approximately 300 persons
were expected to attend the
sixth annual Noise Abatement
Symposium at the Armour Re
search Foundation of the Illinois
Institute of Technology,
Dr. Robert W. Benson, super
visor of acoustic design at ARF
and chairman of the symposium,
said workers generally prefer
surroundings as quiet as possi
ble, but employers sometimes
find that reducing clatter re
sulted in a lowering of effici
ency. "When it's noisy, the work
ers can't talk so much," he said.
One of the noise-reducing de
vices to be discussed is a method
of softening the "clunk" of the
typewriter carriage return. Ben
son said some employers don't
want this carried too far.
"If the typewrited doesn't
make any noise, the boss can't
tell if his secretary isn't work
ing," he said.
