when a man stops too soon and
too often in his tracks to take
a set shot at the net.
The Insole has a sponge run

a bumper in the heel, for play

roll backward if instinct or the
occasion demands.
Dr. James Naismith, who in
vented the game of putting a
round sphere through a peach
basket back there in the winter
of 1891-92 had foresight, but he
didn't know that half of his
charges were flat-footed. , 1

his idea when he was an instruc

right good, if it hadn't been for
foot trouble. Many of the kids
hit the hardwood of the playing

hob-nailed lads nigh wrecked
the whole program.
The late Dr. Naismith would
not recognize the game today.
The0 new basketball suits today

Expensive Sport
Incidentally, it costs a pile of
green to equip a basketball
team these days. If you buy
things by the dozen, you're
lucky if ou get away with less
than $10 for the pants, $15 for
the jersey, and a heap more for
the sweat suit, without which
no self-respecting basketball
player would appear in public
for his warm up.
Other sports, though, can be
more expensive. Football, for
one. Golf, according' to Nels
Krueger, head of the Wilson op
eration in this area, is really
up there, too.
But if you want to get into
sports where equipment isn't
much problem take up the run
ning and jumping game track.
You can get pants for 90 cents
a pair and a shirt for 70 cents.
Morse Says Campaign
To Be Based on Fads
Portland (U.R) Sen. Wayne
More (D-Ore.) observed his 55th
birthday two days early Tues
day by lashing out at the Eisen
hower administration and pre
dicting that he will be reelected
in 1956 after waging a vigorous
campaign based "on the facts."
Morse told regional CIO lead
ers at a birthday luncheon here
that his campaign manager
would be a woman Mrs. Jean
L. Lewis.
The Oregon Democrat said
some of the issues of his cam
paign would be the farm prob
lem, the question of federal tim
ber land management, the "dan
gerous" Formosa resolution, the
Tidelands oil "give-away" and
the 'Dixon-Yates controversy.
"Powerful forces across the
country will try to defeat me,"
Morse said, "but I'm going to
face one issue after another and
take the fats to the people."
Portland (U.R) The Port
land city council has approved
unanimously a motion to deny
an extension of Portland Trac
tion Company's franchise to op
erate a 'mass transit system in
the city.

Arrange Group Parties
As Subtle Dutch Treats
Dating can be very expensive
for teen-age boys. Should girls
pay their own way, if it means
more dates for them?
(Q) "We are a group of high
school juniors. Like most girls
cur age, we like parties and
dates. The
problem is
thai most of
the boys
haven't
enough money
to take us out
on dates more
than once a
week. My
friends and I
wonder, if we
Herloek
couldn't have more fun and go
on more dates if we offered to
have 'Dutch treat' dates by pay
ing our own way to movies,
football games, and dances. Our
parents say this is not correct
and they object to it. Most of us
earn money by baby-sitting and
go to movies together anyway,
so why not spend the money to
go with the boys? We don't, of
course, want the boys io think
we are chasing them, but we
don't want to sit home or go out
with girls when we could have
more dates." N.A.
(A) I agree with your parents
that you might readily create
the impression that you were
"chasing" the boys if you sug
gested paying your way on dates.
However, you can be more
subtle and achieve the same re
sults. You could organize little
parties for movies, dances, or
games. All of you could chip in
the money you earn for baby
sitting and buy tickets, provide
food for snacks afterwards, and
perhaps even arrange to have
your parents drive the group to
where you were going to save
transportation costs.
It would be perfectly proper
to invite several boys to go out
to a "movie party" or a "foot
ball party" this way and this
would eliminate all the embar
rassment of "Dutch treats." If
your parents will cooperate you
can have a gay time.

cording to your Horses and Wo
men experts, with whose opin
ion you concur, no woman with
a 28-inch waist can hope to win
a bathing beauty contest, be
come a model or be named one
of the ten best dressed women
in her city. Marilyn Monroe has
a 28-inch waist. Now what have
you and your experts have to
say? A Our opinion is as orig
inally claimed. Miss Monroe
has never won a bathing beauty
contest. She hasn't the figure
for a model. She has never
been named as one of the best
dressed actresses. Her 28-inch
waist measurement is not so
noticeable because she has a 38
inch bust. We repeat, the maxi
mum waist measurement for
those aspiring to win Miss or
Mrs. America titles, become
models or achieve recognition
for being smartly attired is 25.
Twenty - four is preferable.
Twenty - three is still better.

put to this department. I have
never expressed a belief that
there is such a prediction in the
Bible. However, many Biblical

parts of the Bible, most notice

"But the day of the Lord will
come as a thief in the night, in
which the heavens shall pass
away with a great noise, and the
elements shall melt with fervent
heat, the earth also and the
works that are therein shall be
burned up."
