Scheduled in Trial
Of Ex-Sandy Man

nesses to the stand today in the
trial of) Otto Austin Loel,
charged with the January,
1954, mutilationnurder of a
California woman.
The woman's husband, Cam
eron H. " Henderson, Compton,
Calif., was the first witness to
testify yesterday after a jury of
seven men and five women had
been sworn in.
Henderson told how his 31-year-old
wife, Elizabeth Jeanne
Henderson, met Loel in a Comp
ton bar and agreed to accom
pany him on a cross-country
share ie expense trip. Hender
son, saying he and his wife were J
"very much in love," said he
agrMd to the trip.
To Visit Parents
Mrs. Henderson was going to
visit her parents in Newark, O.
Instead, her . slashed body was
found under a motel bed in
Oklahoma City.
Loel, 44, stared downward at
the defense table during the en
tire proceedings, his lips pressed
tightly together.

ed men before his capture in
Florida last January, Loel's var
ied career includes narcotics
smuggling, desertion from the
Navy, a foundry worker and
police chief of Sandy, Ore.
Chessman Loses
Two Attorneys

Two of author-convict Caryl
Chessman's attorneys withdrew
from SisGflefense yesterday.
The attorneys, Berwin Rice
and Jerome Duffy, announced
they, will notify the courts of
their decision to retire from the
case. They said they had been
having "trouble" with their
qfint. .
Duffy sent Chessman a bill
for $10,000 in legal fees.
Chessman has another attor-

Last Monday, Rice and Duffy
won Chessman one of his biggest
legal victories. They persuaded
the U. S. Supreme court to order
a hearing in federal district court

new trial.
Chessman was sentenced to
death for kidnap and rape in
LosQngeles 'county seven years
ago.

Memberships for the annual
concert season of Jickson Coun
ty Civic Music association are
still available, it was announced
today. The annual campaign
.opened Monday and the sale of
memberships has been going
well, it is stated.
An unusually large number of
renewal subscriptions left fewer
tickets available for this week's
campaign than in past years, it
was stat this morning, and
those who have not secured
their memberships are advised
to do so at once.. While the mem
bership sale is customarily open
until Saturday, it is thought
available seats may be sold be
fore that day.
The board of directors has an
nounced one attraction, the Ber
liner Kammerorchester, directed
by Hans von Benda, in mid-November.
Options have been tak
en on Julian Olevsky, violinist,
and the Winged Victory chorus,
a group of male singers, and
these will be confirmed later
when the board makes its final
selection of artists.
Anyone wishing information
on the campaign may call head
quarters, 3-3050, at the chamber
of commerce office.
