John J. Kennedy, 1033 Court

Supreme Council of the Ancient
and Accepted Scottish Rite of
Freemasonry to receive the 33rd
degree of Freemasonry, it was
announced today. Kennedy is
superintendent of Elk Lumber
company. "
Kennedy is master of the Med
ford Consistory and a past mas
ter of Eugene Lodge 11, AF&AM
at Eugene, .where he was active
in Scottish Rite affairs for many
years.

The 33rd degree will be con
ferred at Portland Dec. 29, and
the ceremony of investiture for
the Knight Commander of t h e
Court of Honour will take place
at Portland, Dec. 6 and at Salem
Dec. ,10.
The honors are awarded by
the Supreme Council of the Scot
tish Rite for meritorius service
to Freemasonry and to human
ity. The 33rd degree is conferred
only on those who previously
have received the decoration of
Knight Commander of the Court
of Honour.
Dynamite Death
At Dillard Probed
Roseburg U.R) Douglas
county authorities today inves
tigated the death of a man fol
lowing a dynamite explosion in
a boxcar in the Dillard area
south of here last night.
The body was discovered at
about 7 a.m. today when the box
car, which had been parked on
a siding at a lumber mill, was
moved to another mill.
Sheriff Ira Byrd identified the
man as Robert Ross,, about 50.,
Officers found a 1953 steelwork-
ers union card on the body which
listed the address as Fallon,
Nev.
County Coroner L. L. (Jim)
Powers ordered remains sent to
the University of Oregon Medi
cal school in Portland for an
autopsy.
The body, found in a corner
of the boxcar, was wrapped in
three blankets and canvas and
the victim wore two pair of trou
sers. Officers said there had been
a dynamite explosion in the car.
The boxcar in which the man
was found was sidetracked for
further study by investigating
officers.
Dupree Poe Loses
Freedom Attempt
Salem U.R) Dupree Poe,
one of the ringleaders in several
disturbances at Oregon State
penitentiary, lost out in his ef
fort to gain freedom from a life
sentence through habeas corpus
proceedings today.
The Oregon Supreme Court
upheld Marion County Circuit
Judge peorge R. Duncan in dis
missing Poe's petition for the
writ.
Poe was convicted in Marion
county in 1932 of murdering a
Silverton police officer and was
sentenced to life imprisonment,
Poe contended the judgment
entered in 1932 was , void be
cause the late Circuit Judge Fred
W. Wilson of The Dalles pre
sided at the trial and claimed it
did not appear that Judge L. H.
McMahan of Salem was - disqualified.
Justice James T. Brand, who
wrote the high court opinion,
held that the presumption is in
favor of the regularity of the as
signment of a judge from
another district and also noted
that Judge Wilson was regularly
assigned by the chief justice to
hear the case. .
Pacific Power-Light,
Wyoming Firm Merge
Portland (U.R) Stockholders
yesterday voted almost unani
mously in favor of merger of
Western Public Service Co. with
Pacific Power & Light Co., ac
cording to Paul B. McKee, Pa
cific president.
Western serves 5300 customers
in Laramie, Wyo. Merger will be
accompiisnea by a stock ex
change with PP & L as the
surviving company. Pacific's
Wyoming division serves 27,000
consumers in the state.
A $20,000,000 expansion pro
gram is planned in Wyoming
over the next three years.
