50 Found Dead in .
Storm-Battered
Mexican Town
Mexico City (U.R) Rescue
teams which reached Mexico's
etorm-batteied Pacific Coast re
ported today a death toll of 50
in one town which was "literally
buried" by mud and debris.
Many other sections of the
three-state West Coast area
flooded by a violent storm which
blew in off the Pacific three
days ago remained inaccessible
today.
Red Cross teams were flown
to the town of Atenquique in
Jalisco State and reported the
"whole place" was covered by
mud with "only the church
teeple showing." The teams
said 50 bodies had been recov
ered in Atenquique.
Mo Communications
At Mexico City, officials said
they had had no communications
with the little coastal state of
Colima for more than two days.
It was reported "virtually all
tinder water."
Rescue workers said Tuesday
night they were unable to get
within more than 75 miles of
Colima City because of washed
out bridges and inundated roads.
Authorities in Michoacan State
also said no word had been re
ceived from a number of towns
and villages caught in the sud
den floods.

Lieutenant
With Wife
Ends With
Miami (U.R) A soldier's
suicide note today told the story
of his love for a major's wife
that began with their headlined
flight across Germany and end
ed in blazing gunfire, suicide and
murder at a busy Miami intersec
tion. "This ends what was once a
beautiful romance," the note
said.
George D. Bryson Jr., 32-year-old
combat veteran of two wars,
wrote the note Tuesday a few
hours before he pumped -two
bullets into his mistress, Mrs.
Sylvia Dahl Hess, 22, then shot
himself in the temple and fell
dead across her body.
Witnesses said Bryson met
Mrs. Hess at an intersection near
where she worked as a waitress.
They quarreled violently and
slapped at each other. Then Bry
son took a gun from his pocket
and fired the three fatal shots.
End Much Like Start
Bryson, a veteran of World
War II and the Korean war had
risen from buck private to first
lieutenant and was stationed in
Germany when he met Sylvia
two years ago. She was the wife
of a major.
The two fell in love and ran
away together in a stolen jeep
on a wild ride across the Black
Forest of Germany. Bryson was
captured, court martialed; and
dishonorably discharged from
the Army.
The incident had no effect
on his romance. He took the
woman he loved to Miami, and
there they lived as common law
husband and wife.

place where Sylvia had recently

touched off the shooting.
Authorities' said Bryson was
believed to have a wife and chil

Sylvia's parents are residents
of Ogden, Utah.

Military Direcied
To Concentrate on
Opening War Stages
Washington (U.R) The ad
ministration has directed the
military services to concentrate
on the weapons and forces
needed in the opening stages of
a war and cut down on building
long-term war reserves.
Defense Secretary Charles E.
Wilson brought the new move to
light Tuesday in outlining a plan
which he hopes will bring an
nual savings of about 500-mil-lion
dollars in defense spending.
Help To Offset Spending
Wilson said that the savings
sought would be "just one little
piece" of the effort to balance
the federal budget and would
help to offset increasing military
spending in the field of weapons,
radar and other new develop
ments. The emphasis on forces ready
to strike devastating blows at
the' opening stages of a conflict
fits the theory, mainly, ad
vanced by the Air Force, that
another global war would be de
cided quickly because of - the
power of nuclear weapons.
Wilson told a news conference
late Tuesday that the Pentagon
had turned away 'from the idea
of preparing to "refight" a five
year war on the World War II
pattern and "storing all the
brooms and adding machines" in
advance.
In Lin With New Look
The new orders to concentrate
on modern weapons, reduce in
ventories and make manpowei
savings were in line with the
administration new look for de
fense adopted in 1953. But Wil
son' said there now is need "for
further review" to assure that
defense programs are aligned
as closely as possible to "current
administration policy and world
conditions."
'He directed the services to
eliminate about 68,000 civilian
jobs by next June 30. That will
make a civilian cutback of more
than 250,000 since Wilson took
office. Most of the cuts are
achieved through attribution
rather than firings. " . ;
