Is That So?
Think you've had a hard day
at the office, brother? As far as
fathers go, we humans are down
right lucky! Consider.
- The male sea catfish not only
broods the eggs in his mouth but
also does not feed until those
eggs are hatched.
A small Chilean frog manages
slightly better. The male gulps
down the dozen or more eggs
the female lays and keeps them
in his vocal pouch, under the
tongue. This permits him at least
to eat whenever he gets a chance
without the danger of swallow
' ingcfcis and her offspring, but he
cannot croak.
The giant water bug carries
his unborn on his back where
they have been placed by the
female.'Until they hatch, father
bug is unable to fly bepause the
tggs seal the covers of his wings
together.
The European midwife toad
wraps his wife's eggs around his
legs where they remain for three
weeks until they hatch.
Father ostrich lives a double
life not only does he wear the
pants in the family but also, in
season, he wears an apron over
them. It's like this: As the mat
ing season advances, he fights
aggressively with all members
of his sex, pounding around the
arena with feet and beak in vic
ious combat. The winner takes
all and for the time being,
he is master of his harem. Then
the bully turns sissy. After mat
ing with his group of females, he
makes the nest admittedly not
much as nests go, but he does
scratch out a hollow in the sand.
Then each female in his harem
lays perhaps a dozen enormous
eggs withincthe nest until there
are well over 30, sometimes even
60 or 80. After a week or ten
days, the master calls a halt The
nest is closed, and the male sits
in splendid isolation and
hatches them within six to sev
en weeks.
Exchanger, Parental Role

the nest and incubates them.

exchanged their parental roles,
apart from laying eggs, but also

selling his automobile for $8,
Melvin James had enough money
to pay a fine for driving an im
properly registered car. After
pleading guilty, James told the
judge that the car had caused
him so much trouble that he had
sold it following his arrest.
Obligingly, the judge cut the
fine from $10 to $8.
PROMISE KEPT
Pittsburg (U.PJ Three young
hoodlums kept their word when
they told Edward Klein he would
get his stolen car back if he
went to the corner of Sixth and
Penn Avenues. Klein went to
the spot and found the car. A
few minutes later, the youth?
tossed his keys at him from the
window of the auto in which
they drove past another stolen
