'Gift Activities'
Portland Oregon Heart as
sociation will not initiate or
sponsor any "gift activities as
sociated with the illness of Pres
ident Eisenhower," but will "ac
cept and account for any dona
tions resulting from a spontan
eous effort on the part of indi
viduals or groups," Dr. Ernest
Boylen, association president has
announced.
"The illness of the president
has resulted in spontaneous 'Get
Well Ike' movements in various
parts of the country," Dr. Boy
len axplained, "and the Ameri
can Heart association ' has re
ceived numerous inquiries as to
whether it is sponsoring any
special activities."
"As a chapter of the American
Heart association, the Oregon
Heart association is following the
lead of the national organization
which has advised that while no
movements are being iniated,
contributions resulting from any
such activities will be accepted
at any time to carry forward the
fight against heart diseases."
Dr. Boylen noted that the as
sociation's regular fund-raising
period is the month of February
and that an extensive campaign
will be carried on at that time.
Gas Flame to Power
New Air Conditioner
Chicago. (U.R) The large
Loop office building of a utili
ties firm will undergo a $2,000,
000 air-conditioning job, but it
won't be with electricity.
The Peoples Gas, Light and
Coke Co., will live up to its
well-advertised slogan, "You can
do it better with gas." Engineers
figured out how to air-condition
the 20-story building by using
a gas flame. The job will be
completed by 1956.
The heart of the system will
be located in the sub-basement
where three gas-fired boilers
rated at 375 horsepower will
generate steam to operate a tur
bine. The turbine drives a cen
trifugal compressor, cooling the
water used in the air-conditioning
system.

Studios Inrade Scene
The movie studios moved Into
TV with the air of a hero rush
ing to the rescue. But the Warn
er and Fox programs turned
out to be long commercials, in
disguise, for movies plus film
ed dramas that drew few raves.
MGM may revise its show of old
film clips, trade reports say, to
include more live entertainment
at the request of the sponsor.
Even Walt Disney's new
"Mickey Mouse Club" was bom
barded with complaints of too
many commercials, not enough
cartoons.
The Screen Directors' Guild
marched , bravely into the TV
wars, but its first two filmed
dramas brought a mixed reac
tion. Food at the SDG premiere
party, however, received a high
Nielson rating. It was produced
by Chasen's Restaurant, the

The SDG made sure the press
made the event by hauling them
by bus from a competing party
at the Beverly Hilton Hotel that
introduced the new Jackie Coop

on the bus so critics need not go
without during the 15-minute
ride.

The Cooper party was judged
a success except the sad-eyed

TREES AND LIGHTNING
Kent, O. (U.R) The bigger
they are, the harder they fall.
That goes for trees, as well as
fighters, when they get struck.
But there's a relatively easy way
for trees to escape knockout
blows from lightning, say Davey
tree experts. Lightning cables
installed on big trees are sure
protection. . '
