ADA Okays Three Leading Men
As Demo Presidential Candidates

The national
chairman is Jo
seph L. Rauh
Jr. of Washing
ton, D. C, who
was unable to

please his organization. Rauh
dedicated ADA, however, to seek
to influence the nominating con
ventions of both political par
ties. Rauh listed in alphabetical or
der the three Democrats he re
gards as leading presidential can
didates: Gov. Averell Harriman,
New York; Sen. Estes Kefauver,
Tennessee, and Adlai E. Steven
son, Illinois.
In the Bag
Any one of these, if nominated,
could count ADA in the bag with
confidence even though the Re
publicans come up with a pres
idential ticket substantially fit
ting that organization's specifications.
The hard core of ADA is com
posed of veterans of FDR's New
Deal. Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt is
national honorary - chairm a n.
Robert R, Nathan, a notable New
Dealer, is chairman of the exec
utive committee. Arthur M.
Schlesinger Jr., of Stevenson's
1952 strategy board, is national
vice chairman.
A green light from ADA is a
solid advantage in a Democratic
nominating convention.
The smartly-led ADA pack
considerable punch. Chairman
Rauh endorsed what he called
the three leading Democratic
candidates in a speech delivered
Sunday night at Rutgers Univer
sity. It was more interesting than
widely reported.
Rauh disposed of the Demo
crats easily in friendly fashion.
He devoted most of his speech
to an attack on Vice-President
Richard M. Nixon and a warning
to the Republican Party that it
next year.
"The Republicans know the
independent vote is liberal,"
Rauh said. "The Democrats know
it. Just read the papers.
"The editorial columns are
featuring a new parlor game: Lo-cating-a-winner,
better known as
trying to find a Republican who
doesn't look like a Republican.

served 60,000 school breakfasts
daily as compared to 45,000 the
year before.
Thirteen hospitals with a ca
pacity of 1,197 beds were built
throughout the country and con
struction of a 1,850-bed medical
center was started in Mexico
City. ,
Inoculations for malaria, ty
phoid fever, leprosy, smallpox,
tuberculosis, venereal and other
communicable diseases were
given to 5,163,720 persons.
Rural social welfare was ex
tended to 103 centers serving
1,700,000 farmers and 304 com
munities. Ruiz Cortines said social secur
ity now covers 1,600,000 Mexi
cans 100,000 more than a year
ago of which 70,000 live in
rural areas.

ReVille, 77, died Tuesday, Oct.
11, at his home in Rogue River
where he had resided for the
past three years. He was born
in Hutchinson, Kan.
He is survived by his widow,
Thesla ReVille, and a son, Don
ald N. ReVille, Portland.
Funeral services were held
Oct. 15, in L. B. Hall chapel,
Grants Pass, with the Rev. D.
F. Barnett officiating. Interment
was in Hillcrest Memorial park.

hired another grade school
teacher and may find that one
more will be needed due to the
increase in enrollment.
Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Thompson
and three children have moved
from Brookings, where they have
resided the past year, to their
home on East Evans creek rd.
Mrs. Bud Dick assumed the
duties of secretary of Rogue
River Community Chest -at the
meeting Oct. 6. Mrs. Dick re
places Mrs. P. J. Giesen who
resigned because of full time
duty at Josephine General hos
pital. The drive for funds is still
in progress and donations may
be mailed to Community Chest,
P. O. box 453, Roguer River.
Larry Sheehan is serving his
second year as chest chairman.
Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Sham-
bow of Inglewood, Calif., arrived
Tuesday, Oct. 11, for an extend
