Kefauver Uncertain On President Race
Washington (U.PJ Sen.
Estes Kefauver says he has not
made up his mind whether he
will run for president in 1956.
The Tennessee Democrat is
sued a mimeographed statement
Monday saying he wants to con
wit 'a number of Democratic
leaders in variou parts of t h e
country."
Kefauver said he would de
cide and announce his decision
within a "reasonable" time. But
he' indicated that he was in no
hurry.
He told newsmen his decision
will not be materially influenced
by similar decisions to be made
by President Eisenhower and
Democrat Adlai E. Stevenson.
Stevenson was in New York
tod for a conference with Sen.
Herbert H. Lehman (D-NY), a
I supporter of Stevenson and a
possible holdout if the New York
delegation pledged to Gov. Av
erell Harriman. A spokesman for
Lehman said the senator may
have something to say about the
Democrftic presidential nomina
tion in a week or so.
, Kefauver did make clear that
he is not considering the vice
presidency and that he will run
for the top job or not at all.

Soviet naval construction Mon
day despite Russian efforts to
prevent it.
The ship, ending a goodwill
visit had been scheduled to leave
in pre-dawn darkness at the re
quest of the Soviets to prevent
the British from seeing fhe Neva
shipyards.
But a gale came up and forc
ed cancellation on the Soviet
security measures and the Tri
umph passed the shipyard in the
full light of day.

was buzzing today over its first
world premier of a Western film
since the Communist revolution.
Rene Clair's French film
"Great Maneuvers" starring

day night. Leading Soviet actors,
directors and writers attended
and warmly applauded the mo
vie. Tickets for the performance,
first of a series of French films

door of Leicester prison Monday
night and a guard opened it to
welcome Dennis Anson, 25.
Anson, who had been serving
a nine months larceny sentence,
had escaped earlier in the day
but returned voluntarily because
"I split my trousers while climb
ing over a wall.'

Challenged To Duel

Paulo Bittencourt,- publisher
of the Correio de Manha and
president of the Inter-American
Press association, has been chal
lenged to an "armed duel" by
a Brazilian senator his news
paper castigated.
Sen. Jaracy 'Magalhaes issued
the challenge in a speech in the
Senate Monday. He proposed the
duel be held in Uruguay because
such "affairs of honor" are pro
hibited by Brazilian law.
An editorial in Correio de
Manha Sunday 'denounced Mag
alhaes as a "low-level demo-
gogue, irresponsible and turn
coat." Magalhaes was a collaborator
of the late President Getulio
Vargas who committed suicide
last year after being ousted by
the armed forces. After Vargas
death, he became prominent in
the political circles of the new
government. '
