Mike Bossier Has Plan To
Improve Marketing Rogue
Valley Pears in Eastern US
By SID HOLLINGSWOHTH
Berkeley, Calif. This is be
ing written in the office of the
Berkeley Daily Gazette, a paper
about the same size as the Mail
Tribune. The bands are blaring
forth at the stadium where
Washington State football team
tangles with the Golden Bears of
California. ,
This postscript to Pinkin Pears
is inspired by the ohance ac
quaintanceship made on board
ing the Shasta Daylight with
Mike Bossier who is on his way
from fruit season work to his
horns at Belleville in southern
.Illinois, just across the river
from St. Louis.
Mike Bossier is an old timer
in the pear industry and while
he has retired from the picking
part of the fruit growing bus
iness, he has a world of knowl
edge and experience which
some of the growers recognized
to the extent of engaging him
for special duty.

Hs has just completed an ap
praisal of a number of orchards
near Roseburg, not for tax pur
poses, but for a prospective pur
chaser. He has at least 25 years
to his credit for work with Bear
Creek, Cook and Zimmerman
orchards. He has some definite
ideas about fruit growing which
seem to have bearing on the'
present predicament of the in
dustry. Mike, as he is known around
town, thinks that the real job
ahead is one of merchandising
and popularizing Rogue Valley
pears.
"There is one thing I can't
understand," he says. "The fruit
goes to market with destination
unknown. I understand the bulk
of the pears are shipped directly
into the New-York market. I
do know that a great many cities
in the midwest and in other
parts of the country I have visit
ed don't know anything about
Rogue Valley pears, or any pears
other than the little side
variety." .
Bossier recalled a visit of the
late Will Rogers to Medford
where he addressed an organi
zation and then when he had left
they read his comment about the
visit. Will said he visited the
famous pear growing town of
Medford but never' saw a pear
the whole time he was there,
Mike related.
Here is Mike's idea on ad
vertising: . "There is one little thing, the
pear grower can do to stimulate
wider sale. They have a paper
wrapper now which doesn't say
anything. People buy the fruit
and find it hard and unripened.
They only buy once if they don't
know how to ripen the fruit.
Why don't they print the direc
tions for ripening the hard
pears? Then they ' would find
out what a wonderful product
it is."
Mike Bossier ought to know
about the pear growing business,
apart from the experience he
has .had with the fruit in the
Rogue River Valley. He comes
from Lorraine, France, and the
pear industry is a major opera
tion in France, to wit Cornice,
Bosc, Anjous and other French
varieties. "It is surprising how
few people know these are
French names," he says.
He grew up in the nursery
business which his father start
ed in Illinois. "There wasn't
much trouble in marketing in
those days. They went by truck
to St. Louis. And there wasn't
the care taken of the trees that
we find today."
Mike thinks the Pacific Coast
is far ahead of other parts of
the country in scientific fruit
growing. "That'8 why they have
such a fine article to sell. But I
sometimes wonder if they aren't
putting so much attention in cul
tivating the trees and the grow
ing and harvesting, that they
forget that the public has to
know something about the pro
duct itself before their efforts
will be recognized."
