fFoot Chests for Trinkets
Sold for Good Profit
Misi net'i camphor wood
chest might just as well have
been a battered footlocker for
all the consideration she gave it.
"That old thing," she said. "I
got that from a native cabin on
Kona. A Chinese-Hawaiian had
it. It was under his porch and
he sold it to me for $10.
The chest was just under three
feet long, 17 inches high and 16
inches wide. The boards were a
good three-quarters of an inch
thick, . and the uprights at the
corners were a full inch and a
half on either side.
In addition to being held to
gether by what appeared to be
a tongue and groove technique,
all four corners were bound
along their entire length by good
stout brass. Furthermore, brass
strapping ran completely around
the chest in such a way that
BUTTON MOLD UNSIGNED.
"What do you think of this,
Uncle Pinkney, said my niece
Judith offering me , a strange
looking object.
At first glance, I thought it
was some kind of an old com
pass. ThCre were two arms ex
tending from a central hinge,
each tapering, to a rather rough
point. They were open at nearly
a 90-degree angle, but since a
third arm extended midway be
tween the other two, but behind
them, it was clearly not a com
pass. Also, the third arm had
four circular depressions in it, of
two sizes.
"It's a button mold," said my
niece excitedly. "You'd never
guess what it is otherwise. It
was used for molding pewter but
tons. ' .
WAITS TO GET BETTER PRICE FOR GOLD DOLLAR
"Thi is ont of the few gold
dollars put out by the Confeder
acy. How much will you pay
for it?"
The customer held out a small,
velvet-lined, jewel box in which
lay a tiny coin. Fred picked it
up and began to examine it care
fully, while I wondered how
long it would be before he came
out with dime cutting remark
to the effect that the coin of top
value put out by the Confeder
ates was a half dollar.
The coin was a beauty, an ex
ample of the United States gold
dollar that was coined over a
period of years starting in 1856.
On the Averse side was the head
of an Indian Princess, left, sur
rounded by the legend United
States of America.
-"Where do you get the Confed
erate business," I asked, turning
the coin over. 1
"See the little 'D on the re
verse," said Fred. The "D" was

when the strapping was pad
locked, it would be virtually im
possible for the chest to break
open.
The brass was not oriental.
Most likely it was the product
of some New England foundry
and had been applied to the
chest by a seaman on a long voy
age across the Pacific as the ship
carried a consignment of coolie
laborers to Hawaii. At any rate,
the brass had been decorated by
a nail punch in designs that were
distinctly nautical and typical of
New England.
"Can't you see that this is
something of an antique," I
asked Miss Janet.
"It certainly smells like it,"
she sniffed. "Well, I'll see what
I can get for it," she added.
A few days later she sold it
for $150.00, a price that was
much too low, I felt. .
BUT PROVES VALUABLE
I noticed that there were reg
ularly spaced indentations in the
arms, so spaced as to meet over
the depressions in the third.
"They poured the metal down
through those cuts, I guess, and
then it could flow evenly from
mold to mold," she said, opening
the piece and pointing to a chan
nel that linked the four depres
sions. "Unfortunately it isn't signed.
Lots of the button molds were
signed by their makers, except
those made of wood, of course.
And those that have a signature
are worth plenty. But just the
same, I've already been offered
$50.00 for it, and I expect to get
much more."
. She finally got $65.00 for it,
a nice return on her investment
of $1.00. .

"Well," he continued. "Every
gold 'dollar struck off in 1861
was done by the mint at Dahl
onega, Ga., and all of them were
struck after the mint had been
seized by the Governor of Geor
gia on April 8.
; "Unfortunately, the mint rec
ord of operations under the Con
federacy has been either lost or
destroyed, so we don't know just
how many of these coins were
made."
"How much will you offer?"
the customer said again.
"Two hundred and fifty dol
lars," Fred replied.
"Nothing doing," said the
owner, putting the tiny piece
back in its box "I know it cata
logues high as $400, and I expect
to get a lot nearer that than
$250.00. -

Note it currently reported that
"women' are going brunette."
Our ever alert Horses and Wom
en Department reported that
over six months ago. Right now
the situation is that only one
woman in ten is asking for a
red-haired coloring job. Only
three in ten prefer to be blondes.
All the rest want to be bri
nettes. That is not because gen
tlemen are now preferring bru
nettes. It if because a brunette
hair coloring looks more natural
than the others. Most' red, silver
blonde, platinum blonde, straw
blonde hair coloring jobs look
so phony they don't even de
ceive men. Few things cheapen
a woman s appearance more
than a phony looking hair dye
ing job.
Asking
Queries from clients. Q. My
dear fellow, don't you know that
"Take Back the Universe and
Give Me Yesterday" is a song,
not a line in a play? A. It was
a song title, but also a line in
the play, "The Silver King." ... .
Q. What's the easiest job you
ever had? The hardest? A.
Easiest was as a baseball writer.
A soft touch. But it does get mo
notonous. Hardest? I worked on
a farm in New England for three
weeks. That was really rugged.
. , . Q. Was Pearl White, the
serial queen, star of "The Perils
of Pauline," born in Poland?
A. I have heard that claimed
but my understanding is that
Pearl -was born in Glen Ridge,
Mo.
A 'Bill Daly'
No doubt you have heard the
turf expression "off on a Bill
Daly." Are you clear as to what
it means? Well, sir, if you saw
the Swaps-Nashua match on tel
evision you saw a perfect ex
ample of it. Eddie Arcaro really
got Nashua off on a Bill Daly.
That means to get a horse off in
front and to try to stay in front
throughout the race. "Father
Bill" Daly, picturesque owner
and trainer of the yesteryear, the
inspiration . of the term, always
gave the following instructions
to his jockey: "Lad, get this here
horse off in front, and try to stay
there. If ye die, die in front."
Long Titles
That long film title, "Love Is

concerned, long titles are not
new. There was a Broadway hit
titled "The Mummy and the
Humming' Bird.'' John Drew
starred in that. Also, one called
"A Butterfly on the Wheel,"
starring Madge Titherage. Many
novels have had long and pe
culiar titles. For example, "The
Rivet in Grandfather's , Neck,"
by James Cabell. Then there was
the best seller titled "They
Shoot Horses Don't They?"
Speaking of titles I note Sophia
"The Sizzler" Loren is to appear
in a film titled "Too Bad She's
Bad." That's quite an eye catch
er. However, my favorite title
of all titles of films, plays or
novels is that of the mystery
novel titled "The Corpse in the
Derby Hat."

Ball of Fire Seen
In Sky Over Texas
Edinburgh, Tex. (U.R) More
than a dozen persons and weath

have reported seeing a flaming
ball of fire sweep across the
sky in the Lower Rio Grande

At about the same time, the
sheriff's office at Anahuac, Tex.,
said it had a report of a jet plane
exploding and crashing "some
where in the county."
Residents along the seawall
at Galveston reported seeing a
"long trail of fire" over the Gulf
of Mexico. They said it exploded
and disintegrated In black

The mysterious flaming ob
