Health authorities in Los An
geles recommended the use of a
solution of boric acid in boiled
water (distilled water, rain wa
ter or snow water preferably,
but ordinary tap water if none
of these is available) as a sooth
ing eye wash to relieve irritation
due to smog, fog, smoke or dust.
Oddly enough the conductor
of this column cordially, believe
it or not, approves and applauds
this suggestion of the health
authorities. No, really, I'm not
getting soft or mellow. I'm just
delighted to find that some
health authorities are not afraid
to recommend popular use of a
remedy, which the "science
writers" of the various newspa
pers and popular magazines pro
nounced "dangerous" only a
year ago.
Perhaps we shouldn't censure
the bright boys, and girls who
are so designated. In this in
stance they merely plucked a
statement from a report pub
lished in a medical journal and
built-their pieces on it.
What the "science writers"
did. not inform their readers is
that the physicians who reported
the "poisoning" of an infant by
boric acid applied in the form
