Insofar as Horses' and Women
are concerned I am doing all
right with the horses. I did have
two losing tickets one day last
week but it was a very muddy
track. As for women I am having
a little difficulty with them in
addition to trying to understand
them. Various groups of fern-
t inine subscribers indignantly say
this department is unfair to them.
Not long ago many brunettes
were complaining that we are
prejudiced in favor of redheads.
Then many Capricorn women
complained they were being ne
glected in the stargazer reports,
.. Now, I have a number of bitter
complaints from feminine sub
scribers whose wedding days
were in May. They say that in
my recent report as to the brides
calendar the May brides were
omitted. "Why so?" asks one
Milwaukee May bride, "Are we
so bad that a report on our char
acters is unprintable?" It was
just an oversight. What more
can I say, when I say I am sorry?
The report on May brides will
. appear in an early issue.
Passing By
Stan Musial. The highest sal
aried major league ballplayer,
with an annual salary of $85,000
a year. That's somewhat cStu
pendous. But don't forget that
over 25 years ago Ty Cobb was
paid $75,000 a season by Connie
Mack of the Athletics. And the
dollar then had three times its
current guying power. The in
come tax was also much lower.
Anyway, Stan is progressing
very nicely financially. Owns an
Interest in three profitable res
taurants in St. Louis and also
a share in some valuable income
property.
Please Note
How about your dentist? Do
his feet hurt? Is he wearing com
fortable shoes? Does he feature
footgear that keeps him well
balanced? If not he may let the
drill slip while working on your,
or have a similar mishap. A bar
ber should also be comfortably
shod. Or he is liable to let the
shears or razor slip. Or, so says
an expert on the problems of the
pedal extremities.
So to Bed
Do you find your bed is ex
pertly made? Is your wife clever
that way? How about your teen
aged daughter? I have just heard
from a feminine subscriber who
says she learned how to make
a bed properly when reading
"Uncle Tom's Cabin." In that
classic there is a passage which
tells in detail how Topsy was
taught to make a bed properly.
Songs
The writer of several popular
songs has an opportunity to
achieve a lifetime income from
them. The British composer Tol
chard Evans keeps reviving
songs he wrote 20 or more years
ago and is collecting much
money in current royalties. Some
of the songs he has revived are:
"Lady of Madrid," written 20
years ago; the three songs titled,
respectively, "If," "Faith" and
"Unless," all written in 1934;
and "Lady of Spain" and "Let's
All Sing Like the Birdies Sing,"
written in 1931.
Asides
One of my favorite combina
tions is breaded veal cutlet and
spaghetti. The spaghetti is bet
ter this year than last. Makers
are using a better grade of ma
terial. . . '.. In Los Angeles the
carpenters are now being paid
$2.90 'an hour. That makes $116
for a five day week and there
is quite a little opportunity for
overtime.
Horses and Women
Looking over the statistics of
the 43 finalists in a beauty con
test I noted 39 had waist meas
urements of 24 inches or less.
Of the other four, two had 26
inch waists and two had 25 inch.
Keep this in mind if you are
thinking of streamlining your
wife to compete for the Mrs.

Washington After 200 years
the possibility of another de
portation confronts Acadians
the people of Longfellow's
'Evangeline," story of a wan
dering girl who suffered much
for love.
This time many Acadian fam
ilies will be uprooted if a pro
posed Navy air station is built in
the Evangeline country around
New Iberia, La. Generations of
Acadians have prospered there
while holding to traditions
rooted in distant France and
Nova Scotia.-
The Louisiana Acadians de
scend from several thousand men
and women of French extraction
expelled by the British from
Nova Scotia during a mid-18th
century embroilment with
France for possession of North
America. Groups were random
ly settled from Massachusetts to
Georgia. . Some wandered to
southern Louisiana and found
again the atmosphere they were
torn from French people
French ways of life.
Wanted to be Let Alone
As migrants finally settled in
a hospitable and fertile land,
the gravitated to what they
knew best; farming. In the Wolf
ville and Grand Pre countrysides
of Nova Scotia they had tended
orchards, grown wheat and peas,
raised black-horned cattle and
sheep. In Louisiana they turned
to small farming and cattle rais
ing. They built meeting houses
and strove to re-create their
former life in as much seclusion
as possible in the water-streaked
back country.
They flourished especially
around quiet St. Martinville in
the New Iberia area. There
stands the Evangeline Oak, re
putedly marking the landing
place of the Acadians and the
meeting . place of Emmeline
Labiche and Louis Arcenaux,
the Evangeline and Gabriel of
Longfellow's "Evangeline."
shadows and live oak, the Aca
dians cling to their speech with
the tenacity of the Pennsylvania
Dutch. Many fifth - generation
Americans have little if any
grasp of English. Drill sergeants
in World War II were unbeliev
ing when Louisiana Acadians
said "Je ne comprends pas."
Dialects stemming from
France, Canada and Louisiana
are heard in homes and business
places, all softened in Southern
accent. Some terms are traceable
to French villages of the late
1500's, with borrowings from
Spanish, English and Indian.
Voice intonations and hand ges
tures enliven the speech.
English Somehow Spoken
Attempts at English sometimes
bring strange results along the
bayous. How is a friend feeling?
"Jolliment all right." Was an an
cient amusing? "I laugh till I
bus', me." Emphasis often comes
with finality as "I don' want
any, no," or "I like that, yes."
Thrifty farmers, merchants,
stock raisers and traders, the
Acadians find the New Iberia
area bountiful with temperate
and subtropic plants. Economic
depressions have . largely by
passed the region of which Long-
fellow said:
"Beautiful is the land, with its
prairies and forests of fruit
trees,
"Under the feet a garden of
flowers, and the bluest of
heavens ...
"They who dwell there have
named it the Eden of Louisiana."
