Men of 2055 To Resemble Untidy Salami
Unless They Change Television Habits
Br WILLIAM EWALD
United Press Correspondent
New York (U.R) TV watch
ing in the opinions of some doc
tors surveyed by a manufacturer,
may reduce the nation to a bun
dle of flabby monsters fully
equipped with squint, squat and
stoop.
That's the warning from the
home institute of Trav-Ler Corp.,
an outfit which manufactures
electronic equipment.
According to the poll, the doc
tors look on TV with a dim eye,
a condition that might possibly
be caused by their own video
squint. They see a future world
in which each man will , look a
little like an untidy salami.
Basing their conclusions on in
formation that the average view
er spends some five hours a day
(and even more on week-ends)
ogling his home screen, the ma
jority of the sawbones decided
that homo sapiens 2055 will be
a unique, if that is the word,
specimen.
Legs Will Be Shorter
He will be hunched-over,
bleary-eyed and misshapen. His
legs will be shorter, both of them
atrophied from lack of use. One
arm will be larger than the
other from over-exercising the
muscles in constant eating. And
his waistline will bulge inele
gantly. . Right now, said the doctors,

exactly rank as a physical
charmer. The majority of citi
zens are guilty of sloppy posture.
But the sloppiness is getting
worse as the result of our slouch
ing and lolling in front of TV
sets.
This, they pointed out, puts
an added strain on the heart,
compresses the lungs and wrin
kles the living room couch. And
this, in turn, cuts down the cir
culation, makes breathing more
difficult and results in uphol
stery problems.
Eye-strain, the doctors agreed,
was another serious televiewing
headache, to mix a metaphor or
something. They recommended
adequate light in the screening
room and frequent glances away
from the TV set to keep the orbi
cular jellies from curdling. Also
eye baths.
Go-By To Goodies
As for the eating problem, the
doctors advised viewers to give
the go-by to goodies like pop
corn, candy and such.- Instead,
they suggested radishes, cucum
bers, celery and raw cauliflower
This, it might be pointed out,
will not only cut down on the
viewer's weight problems, but
make it impossible to hear the
commercials.
TV, the doctors recognized,
has become as much a part of
the American way of life as hot
dogs, baseball .and same-day
cleaners. But unless television

who love her to see this show,"
Durante explained today. "And
we got a telegram from her
family tellin' us to use it."
Slips While Dancing
On the program, television
viewers will , see that Carmen
slipped to one knee at the end
of a strenuous mambo routine
with Durante and Eddie Jackson.
She recovered quickly, stood
up and laughed to Durante, "I
can t catch my breath, you take
my lines."
A close-up of the tragic mo
ment originally had been shot.
But when it showed pain on her
face, a covering long-shot was
substituted.
NBC's first thought had been
to shelve the show. But viewers
"sent in an enormous amount of
mail," according to Bill . Har
mon, producer of the program.
"We weren't sure whether it
was good taste to show the
film," the producer said. "But
after the letters came in, and
her family requested the pro
gram be used, we had a confer
ence with the sponsor and de
cided to run it. We held back
the show until now so it wouldn't
look as if we were capitalizing
on anything.
Show Goes On
"Jimmy felt if anything hap
pened to him he'd want people
to see his last show. That's true
of any performer."
Durante added, a "prologue" in
which he assures viewers Car
men's last curtain call was being
shown at the request of her fam
ily. NBC gave her husband, Dave
Sebastian, a print of the pro
gram. It will be shown for ben
efits in Brazil.
