Every Potential Parent
Should Study Childbirth
One movie actress ' accepted
her Oscar before the television
fcudience a few hours before
her baby was born. Another
appears regularly on a televi
sion program wearing things de
signed for approaching child
birth. There is a heart warm
ing tendency among young
women today with as much
pride as they do engagement or
marriage. If they don't parade
it, at least they do not try to
hide their condition, as their
mothers and grandmothers did.
This inclination to recognize
childbirth as a normal, physi
ological, natural process indi
cates, I think, that some Amer
icans are beginning to learn,
through extracurricular study,
cf course, the facts of life.
Such study should include the

Only Time and Patience
Will Reconcile Mother
When a mother sets her heart
on what she considers a "good
match" for her daughter, it may
take time for' her to be recon
ciled to a marriage which does
not meet with her approval.
(Q) "Ever since I was a little
girl, my mother has wanted me
to marry a rich man. Mom has
struggle she
and Dad had,
and she want
ed me to be
spared what
she went
through in the
early years of
her marriage.
Dr. Htsriock "Last year I
eloped with a young man who is
just getting started in business.
I knew my mother would object
and make a scene if I told her
before we were married. Since
then, she hasn't had anything to
do with us, though Dad is very
fond of my husband. A month
ago, I wrote Mom a note and
told her I was pregnant. I haven't
heard from her, although we
live just a few miles from my
parents and 'Dad often comes to
see us. I know I wouldn't be
welcome at home so I haven't
been mere since we were mar
ried, I would like to do some
thing to make Mom see how
happy I am, but how can I when
she won't have anything to do
with us?"
J.S. '
(A) Be patient and I am. sure
your mother's heart will soften
when the baby arrives and your
father tells her that he has seen
it.
In the meantime, drop in at
your home when you are sure
your mother will be there alone.
Don't tell her you are coming,
but take her by surprise. She
may be angry at first but be
tactful and tell her about your
plans for the baby. I am sure
she will soften somewhat.
Urge her to come see you and
help with preparations for the
baby. It may take time before
she will accept your husband,
but when he begins to be suc
cessful in business, I am sure she
will be proud to have him in the
family.
