Bernarr MacFadden
Made Fortune With
Health, Publishing
Thursday, October 13, 1953
.Tersev Citv. N.J. U.R) Ber
narr MacFadden, who parlayed
a physical culture and publish
ing career into a fortune, died
in a hospital here last night.
MacFadden, who once said he
expected to live to be 120, built
a multi-million dollar publish
ing empire on sex and raw car
rots. He was derided as a char
latan, arrested as immoral, and
O lauded and adored as a prophet.
Born in a two-room cabin in
Missouri, Aug. 16, 1868, he
started his climb to fame and
fortune as the puny, poverty
stricken son of a drunkard fa
ther and an undernourished
mother. ,
Orphan J Early
Orphaned at an early age, he
made his way through the world
with experience gained through
combining some knowledge of
printing, muscular skill and
clean living. The money that he
made teaching courses in "heal
ing disease by movement"
aundtted him on a $30,000,000
publishing career that was the
talk of the Roaring Twenties.
By the 1930s his publishing
empire had grown to include 10
newspapers and about as many
magazines. One of his most fa
mous and least successful news
papers was the New York Eve
ning Graphic, started in 1924.
The MacFadden publishing
empire also included such maga
zines as Liberty, edited by Ful
ton Oursler. The health culturist
also pioneered the "confessions"
and "love-story" magazines.
Nearly always in the lime
light, he continued to make the
headlines well into his final
years, selling health and sex.
He made his first parachute
jump on his 81st birthday, slept
on the floor, walked barefoot to
absorb "the earth's magnetism"
and reared his five daughters
and two sons in family nudity
indoors and out.

Chief Points Out
Dangers of Fire
To Small Children
Children should never be left
home alone, and baby sitters
should be trained and capable
of protecting children, especial
ly in time of fire.
The National Fire Protection
association, which sponsors Na
tional Fire Protection Week in
cooperation with the Interna
tional Association of Fire Chiefs,
reports that each year more and
more children are trapped and
killed by fire because no one has
been available to help them.
Medford Fire Chief Gordon
Barker urged local residents not
to leave children alone, and
baby sitters should be thorough
ly fire-conscious! He stressed the
importance of the baby sitter
knowing location of front and
back entrances", and the most di
rect route from ' the children's
room to the outside.
Should List Number
She should know the loca
tion of the telephone and there
should be emergency numbers
listed in plain view near the tele
phone, Barker pointed out.
Baby sitters should be instruc
ted to remove the children from
the house on the first smell of
smoke. Barker said the baby-sitter
should not waste time dress
ing the children, but wrap them
in blankets or other available
clothing and move them out of
the house.
Once the children are safely
out of the house, the sitter should
then notify the fire department,
Barker said. The sitter should
use a neighbor's telephone, and
not take a chance on returning
to the house if she knows there
is a fire.
Egypt Lowers Draft
Age to 18 Years
Cairo (U.R) The government
today announced a tightened
conscription law lowering the
draft age from 19 to 18, but said
it had nothing to do with the
present world situation.
The new law requires every
male of 18 to serve three years
of military duty. Those physical
ly unfit also will be drafted,
but for non-military tasks.
Mine Congress Urges
Immediate Return
To Gold Standard
Las Vegas (U.R) The Am
erican Mining Congress complet
ed a three-day convention by
urging the United States to re
turn to a gold standard and for
the establishment of a free world
market for gold.
The congress said since infla
tion has devalued the dollar be
low 50 cents while a fixed rate
of $35 an ounce for gold has
been maintained for more than
20 years, a changeover to the
gold standard would be "a simple
step."
Would Lift Restrictions
The AMC, in a reslution adop
ted at its closing session yester
day, also recommended removal
of restrictions on the sale, own
ership and purchase of gold by
American citizens. It said the
gold mining industry could be
revived if the federal govern
ment was removed as the sup
plier of gold for manufacturing
needs.
Sen. George W. Malone (R
Nev.), criticized the AMC in a
speech for advocating a protec
tive tariff "without teeth." The
AMC had recommended that au
thority over tariffs be administ
ered by Congress instead of the
Federal Tariff commission.
"American markets are the ob
jectives of every ( nation in the
world and every nation in the
world with the exception of Can
ada and one other has a dishon
est currency," Malone said.
Would Have Been Stronger
He said the AMC resolution
should have been stronger so it
could have been used as a basis
for U. S. negotiation next month
at the Geneva conference on tar
iffs and trade. The Nevada Sen
ator is an advocate of high pro
tective tariffs.
Other resolutions adopted yes'
terday called for:
Tax revisions to allow for de
pletion in the mining industry;
setting of a maximum 50 per
cent on income taxation; elinv
ination of double taxation on
corporate dividends; removal of
limits on expenses for explora
tion; lower capital gains taxes,
and adjustment of taxes on in
comes earned abroad.
