A LICENSE TO PRACTICE
Ever since Topsy was a, colt
and I had too much time to
cogitate on long drives on the
mud roads of Yates county, I
pondered a rankling question:
Why was there so much animos
ity between regular, "old
school," allopathic physicians
and "new school" or ,. homeo
pathic physicians?
This mean spirit 1 was a heri
tage left us by 19th century
practitioners and we (huh, please

Two complementary themes
"The Nature of Music" and "The
Music of Nature" will be de
veloped by the Standard School
Broadcast in programs for the
coming school year, it has been
announced.
The 28th annual course in
music enjoyment, now heard reg
ularly by more than 1,250,000
students in western classrooms,
will return to the air at 9:30 a.m.
Thursday, Oct. 13, on station
KMED (1440 kc).
Programs in the "Nature of
Music" series, which will be
broadcast during the fall semes
ter, will' illustrate the instru
ments, structures and chief types
of music.
During the spring the broad
cast will review the many mu
sical compositions of all kinds
which have been inspired by
Nature's elements sun, moon
and stars; mountains and lakes,
plant and insect life, and the
like.
Format for the program, de
signed for in-class listening, fea
tures an abundance of good mu
sic explained and tied together
by descriptive or dramatic
sketches, the announcement said.
Corn Crop Figured at
3,117,739,000 Bushel
Washington ;(U.R) The Agri
culture department has .esti
mated the 1955 corn crop at 3,-
117,739,000 bushels.
The corn forecast last month
was 3,113,467,000. bushels.
The Crop Reporting board es
timated the 1955 wheat crop at
915,528,000 bushels including
689,403,000 bushels of winter
wheat and 226,125,000 bushels
of spring wheat.
The winter wheat estimate
was the same as last month's
when the crop was virtually har
vested. The spring wheat esti
mate compares with last month's
forecast of 272,373,000 bushels .
- Last year farmers harvested
2,964,639,000 bushels of corn.
Ten year average production
was 3,080,115,000 bushels.
In dollar value, coffee still
leads U. S. imports of all agri
cultural commodities despite a
decline in coffee imports in
1953.

Eventually, however, homeo
pathic physicians became mem
bers or fellows of the county,
state and national medical socie
ties as indeed they had a right
to be, by law. "Today, it seldom
occurs to an intelligent physi
cian to ask whether a respected
colleague studied medicine in a
regular or a homeopathic school.
Medicine, as the "leaders" say,
is making great strides.
Not great enough, however,
to get away from another 19th
century handicap prejudice
against osteopathic physicians. If
there was some excuse for this
50 years ago there is none now.
Since Tony was a pup, and es
pecially in the second quarter of
the 20th century osteopathic
physicians have been required to
meet all the qualifications reg
ular physicians are required to
meet, to get a license to practice,
at least in one state, and that
proves my point, regardless of
what sticky, tricky games the
politicians in the licensing racket
in other states may play.
The disgraceful mess the poli
ticians of American have made
of the licensing of physicians,
healers or whatever you prefer
to call 'em not only retards the
progress of the healing art; it
increases the cost of medical
care. .
Consider how the snide works:
A doctor licensed to practice in
New York is legally qualified to
practice in California upon regis
tration of his New York license
with the California board of
medical examiners, and vice
versa the arrangements be-
between the two states being
what is called reciprocity. But

cense doesn't mean a thing in
California, and vice versa. In
order to obtain a license to prac
tice in California he or she must
take not only the regular written
examination, but also an oral
examination. This' oral examina
tion is the gimmick which makes
it virtually impossible for the
supplicant to practice in Cal
ifornia unless he or she has an
"in" with the politicians who
control the racket.
Multiply such shenanigans by
48 and you'll have some idea
why the cost of medical care is
too high.
If a man or woman gets the
M.D. degree from a school au
thorized to grant the degree, that
should be his or her qualification
to practice medicine and surgery
in any of the 43 states or terri
