Goes on Rampage

phant, who injured three per
sons In a TV sound set rampage
because her on-the-job lunch was
, interrupted, calmed down today.
Old Emma has worked for
more than 30 years before movie
and TV cameras without ever
causing any trouble. But when
trainer William Gamble, 27,
tried to stop her yesterday as
she nibbled at jungle prop
plants on the set, the 9000-pound
elephant became enraged.
Players Injured
Actors Vito Scotti, 25, and
Nino Marcel, 21, riding on Old
Emma's back, were hurled to
the floor by the infuriated ele
phant. Old Emma then headed
for Gamble. She pinned him
against the wall of the sound
stage where a scene for "Andy's
Gang" was being filmed. Portly
Andy Devine, star of the series,
left the set only minutes before
old Emma threw her fit.
Producer Frank Ferrin, who
has made many jungle films,
'grabbed a bull hook, prodded
the elephant and shouted, "Em
ma, stop." Old Emma stopped.
She calmly moved away from
Gamble and followed Ferrin
through a sound stage door into
the alley. Ferrin chained her to
a post.
Lunch Resumed
Old Emma was given some
hay and resumed her impromptu
lunch in the alley. She acted as
if nothing had happened. On
the sound stage were the wreck
ed jungle set and three injured
men and cowing actors and
stagehands.
Scotti and Gamble were hos
pitalized. Marcel was treated for
minor injuries.
Miss Truman Denies
Engagement Rumors

Truman returned to the United
States- yesterday from a Euro
pean tour and laughingly denied
renewed rumors that she is en
gaged. e
Asked if a rumor was true
that she planned to announce
an engagement soon she said:
"I'm sorry, but it isn't true."

Miss Truman said the rumors
apparently stemmed from a sapphire-diamond
ring she was
wearing in Britain during a press
conference. e
"I told them it wasn't an en
gagement ring," she said, "But
they printed the story in the
British newspapers. They
wouldn't believe me. They don't
know me like you do."

Lays Off Mechanics
Portland U.R) Twenty-three
automobile mechanics will be
out of jobs next Sunday because
of dropping patronage on Port
land Traction company buses.
However, traction company
president Gordon Steele said
five of the men would get jobs
as operators. He said 212 vehi
cles were running daily with
fewer riders than a year ago
when 237 buses were in use.
Steel said buses were jammed
only at rush hours and that pas
senger loads dropped sharply
after 6:30 p.m. and on Sundays.
Medics Optimistic On Ike's Recovery
San Diego OJ.R) One of the
heart specialists attending Presi
dent Eisenhower says doctors
are "much more optimistic"
about the President's recovery
than they were two weeks ago.
Col. Thomas W. Mattingly,
chief of the cardiology service
at Walter Reed Army hospital,
Washington, said the President's
morale is excellent and he has
not lost any weight during his
illness.
"We are much more optimis
tic about the President's recov
ery than we were two -weeks
ago, but it is still too early to
be completely reassuring," Mat
tingly said.
The Army heart specialist is
here to participate in a sympo
sium conducted by the San
Diego County Heart association.
Mattingly said the President
is a good patient who follows
doctors' orders "to the letter."
Mattingly examined Mr. Eisen
hower twice before his attack
this year prid said there was no
hint of any heart trouble.
"That's one of the big prob
lems in heart research," he said.
"It is impossible in many in
stances to anticipate a coronary
attack."

Fori Stevens May Be National Shrine
Astoria (5J,R) Plans by town
councilmen of Hammond near
here to make historic Fort Stev
ens into a national shrine and
cemetery were revealed today.
The small town took over care
for the property some years ago
but maintenance cost of about
$1000 a year proved to be too
steep.
Now the town either wants to
keep the property and throw it
open to burial of veterans or
turn it back to the government
as a national cemetery for vet
eran burials.
Mayor Robert Fox said he
was a waiting a report by the
Secretary of the Army regard
ing action by the government in
the matter.
