bert said today the loss of Tony
'Trabert, the pro ranks means
"the United States will have to
start from scratch" in its efforts
to recapture the Davis Cup from
Australia.
The non-playing captain of the
U. S. team pointed out, how
ever, that next year's competi
tion "could develop into a wide
open affair" if Aussie stars Lew
is Hoad and Ken Rosewall fol
low Trabert into the pro game.
Promoter Jack Kramer said
Tuesday he expected Hoad and
Rosewall to turn pro and Talbert
Indicated he also thinks they
will.
Trabert, who won 10 tourna
ments and lost only three this
year,' signed the most lucrative
contract evercgiven a tennis star
to turn pro in Los Angeles Tuesday.

on the bad knee which kept him

Coach Akins said, however,
that none of the injuries will
be sustaining. He has hopes that
everyone, with the exception of
Huey Smith, will be ready for
the contest this weekend with
Humboldt State.

Four-Months-Old Girl
Killed in Auto Wreck
Vancouver, Wash. (U.R) A
four-month-old Everett, Wash.,
girl was injured fatally last
night in a three-car accident
about 12 miles north of here
on Highway 99, the state patrol
reported.
The victim was Patricia Ann
Trosper, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert B. Trosper. She and
her mother were thrown out of
the car in the accident. The
mother, Juliet Trosper, and an
other daughter, Nancy, 2, were
the only others injured, officers
said.
State patrolmen said the Tros
per car was southbound and was
involved in a collision .with a
northbound truck driven by
Robert B. Miller, 36, Portland.
The Trosper car then struck an
other automobile driven by
Frank J. Walsh, 57, Oswego,
Ore.
Rain Cuts Fire
Danger in Modoc
Alturas, Calif. (U.R) Fire
danger in the Modoc National
forest has been halted by heavy
rains in southern Oregon and
northern California. More than
307,113 acres of land in the for
est were denuded by blazes dur
ing one 18-day , period last
month. .
Forest Service officials said
the 436 fires reported In the for
est during the first half of Sep
tember 141,222 acres of timber
land and 165,891 acres of grass
and brush-covered watershed.
The blazes cost an estimated
$3,610,000 to control, and -destroyed
homes, buildings and
equipment valued at $14,000,-000.

day, and Coach Jack Meyers is
a little worried. Chuck Chatfield

with marked success against the
Tiger squad yesterday.

Douglas Jail Rioters
Subdued by Tear Gas
Roseburg (U.R) Douglas
county jail was reported quiet
today after a riot Monday night
in which windows, lights, wash
basins - and showers were de
stroyed. Sheriff Ira Byrd said Richard
McKelvey and Robert Mitchell,
both 17, started a "riot in one
of the jail cells. They were ar
rested Aug. 31 in connection
with a Myrtle Point robbery
and on a California warrant for
grand theft. ,
Sheriff's officers subdued the
rioters with tear gas.
