Red Clover Seed
Production Forecast
Portland U.R) The U.S.
Department of Agriculture to
diy forecast this year's red
clover seed production for Ore
gon at 2,800,000 pounds, up 17
per cent from last year.
A big increase also was re
ported nationally with the fore
cast at 87,895,000 pounds, up 58
per cent from a 'small crop last
year. Kart Hobson, Washington

clover prices. '
Fishermen Help Prove .
Shad Return To Spawn
' Holyoke, Mass. (U.R) Con
necticut River fishermen are
helping themselves by helping
the government.
Already the first finless ihad
has been turned over to the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service. And
there'll be yore, nearly 100,000
more if all goes well.
That's the number of shad
removed by3 the government ex
perts from the Windsor Locks
Canal in the fall of 1952. The
fishermen are helping the ex
perts prove a theory that the
shad come back from the ocean
to their fresh water spawning
streams after three or four years.

You're Not Hip if You Say Hep; Murder Of English Language Becoming Real Bad
By H. D. QUIGG
United Presi Correspondent
New York U.R) Notes on
the American language, - long

the British fit to be mother
tongue tied.

The most-heard remark on
Broadway nowadays, the phrase
in most use, according to our
Broadway operative, is "laid a
bomb."
Nobody eyer lays an egg any
more, when he fails in some
thing. He lays a bomb. "That act
laid abomb on opening night."
The latest bop talk requires
you to say, if you like a musician
"Man, he's real bad." Or, "He
blows bad." This critical pro
nouncement is delivered in a
monotone, with the "ba-a-a-d"
dragged out for emphasis. Means
the exact opposite of what he
says. Means he's the greatest.
Also, bopsters are likely to
use the verb "blows" for the
act of playing ' any instrument.
"Man, he blows bad drum."
The musician calls his instru
ment an "ax." "They left their
axes on the stand."
Music that hipsters
like: "Boom-chuck."

In the white-collar canyons of
Manhattan, the smart-talk boys
are almost constantly "doing"
some kind of a "bit." If they
want to propose going to lunch,
they say: "Let's do the lunch
bit." If they see a motion pic
ture,' they "do the movie bit."
Conceivably, they could see a
panhandler or moocher doing
the bite bit. Anyhow, this bit
thing is spreading fast.
The people also are habitally
"getting a fix" on things, phrase
presumably borrowed from navi
gation, in which a plane or ship
gets a fix on its position, thereby
determining where on earth it
is. If one of these boys is in a
muddle as to how he and the girl
friend are going to spend . the
evening," he says: "Let's get a
fix on this evening."
The newest word for food is
"scoff." Dark eyeglasses are
"shadows." The word for taking
a break from the job, or what
ever, is "split" "Let's split for
some scoff."
A bed is now a "pad." "I was
in the pad when
