UMC Funds Provide
Boy Scouts With
Training Program

A boy scout helping an old
lady across the street has pro
vided many cartoons, but it bears
little relationship to scouts and
leaders who spent 13 hours trans
porting an injured man down

lin. A Scout's ability to help oth
ers depends upon how well he
learns each skill. Boy Scouts are
prepared to administer first aid
to injured and by aiding in dis
asters. When the government
needs widespread help, as in
war, the Boy Scouts are called
upon. In the "Get Out the Vote"
campaign, they participate.
When a Scout increases his
kills, he is advanced from a
Tenderfoot to the highest award,
the Eagle award. "

Craft skills were taught to 834
Scouts and Eplorers in 1955, a

home centered function with
parents serving as leaders.

scouting to more boys.. The

Summary figures listing the
top five dairy herds fdr the
month of September have been
released by the Jackson county
Dairy Herd Improvement assoc
iation. Top producing herd for the
month was owned by Richard
Westerberg, whose 40 cows av
eraged 742 pounds of milk and
41.3 pounds of butterfat.
The other four top herds were
owned by R. L. and Blanche Wy
ant, 29 cows, averaging 727
pounds milk and 40.1 pounds
butterfat; Three Jays Guernsey
farm, 22 cows, 843 pounds of
milk, 38.7 pounds butterfat; E.
B. Poyer, 13 cows, 677 pounds
milk, and 37.1 pounds butterfat;
and' J. H. Stanley, 42 cows, av
eraging 651 pounds of milk and
36.4 pounds butterfat.
Top cow for the month was
Sadie, owned by Richard West
erberg. The cow produced 1665
pounds of milk, 94.9 pounds of
butterfat, and has 130 days in
milk.

Ozark May Get
Permanent Permit
Washington (U.R) The Civil
Aeronautics Board Monday pro
posed to grant permanent certifi
cation to Ozark Air Lines of St.
Louis, Mo.
Permanent certifications
would cover most of the points
currently served by the line un
der temporary certificates.
The CAB said the action was
designed to speed up permanent
certification of local service car
riers as ordered by Congress this
year.
The act requires the CAB to
grant permanent . authority to
local service carriers to serve at
least 50 per cent of the points on
their routes, if they so request.
The board proposed perma
nent certification for all but
eight of Ozark's 28 points. Tem
porary certification would con
tinue for Danville, Mattoon
Charleston, Marion-Herrin and
Cairo, 111.; Pittsburg and Cha
nute, Kan.; Cape Girardeau,
Mo., and Clinton, la.

Policeman Quizzed
In Dentist's Case

cused of strangling a pretty
young patient for threatening to
"tell the world" he made her
pregnant, planned further cross
examination today of a police
man summoned when her body
was found.
The policeman, Ben G. Soule,
testified late Monday that he
and another officer viewed the
body of 21-year-old Mrs. Eliza
beth Mary Moonen last April 23
shortly after it was found in the
fashionable Lake of Isles district
by John Cowles Jr., Minneapolis
Star and Tribune newsman and
son of the publisher. '
Soule' said the woman's face
and legs were discolored and
that there was a bruise on her
throat and sand in her face and
mouth. .
Soule's testimony, plus the
fact that there was no sign of a
struggle or 'weapon i the area,
indicated Mrs. Moonan had been
slain elsewhere. ,
Clark Gable Denies
Wife Expecting Baby
Hollywood (U.R) Film star
Clark Gable said today he and
his wife, Kay Williams, would
like to have children but she is
not expecting a baby.
"Unhappily, it's not true,"
GctVe said of rumors that his
wife, the former Kay Williams
Spreckels, is pregnant. "Kay has
a friend who is uite ill and she
has been visiting at the hospital,
which is probably the explana
tion of how the rumors started."
Mf s. Gable has two children
by a previous marriage.

Alan Graham Wood, 42, sued
Walter Broom, 76, Monday, on a
charge of enticing his wife, 43.
Broom denied the charge. He
said he had a weak heart and
had been instil health for some
years.
Measles, Pneumonia
Top Illness Report
Twelve cases of communicable
diseases were reported In Jack
son county for the week ending
Oct. 8, according to a report re
leased today by the county
health department. " "
Topping the list were four
cases of measles, including three
in Medford and one in Ashland,
and four cases of pneumonia,
including two in Ashland and
!one each in Tiller and Apple-
gate.
Also on the list were two
cases of chicken pox, with one
each in Central Point and Butte
Falls, one case of influenza in
Gold Hill, and one case of strep
throat in Medford.

Russians May Buy
Fabricated Houses
Fort Wayne, Ind.(U.R) Ten
housing experts from Russia
were so excited by American
pre-fabricated homes today that
they asked permission to take
one home to Moscow.
The Russians, who left by air
today for Chicago, said they
would like to buy an American
pre-fab and reconstruct it, com
plete with American furniture
and appliances in Moscow.
They made the request to Wil
ilam Hall, head of a local prefab
firm, who said he would have to
check export sales regulations
before giving the delegation a
reply.
The Soviets, however, got the
green light for the transaction
from their own officials.
Victor Zegal, second secretary
of the Russian Embassy in Wash
ington, said there would be no
objections to buying the home.

Internal Revenue Agent
Applications Sought
Applications for internal rev
enue agent are being accepted
by the internal revenue service,
civil service board of examiners
in San Francisco, Calif.
Agent positions are concerned
with individual, partnership and
corporation tax return audits to
determine federal tax liability.
Applicants must have three years
commercial ., accounting exper
ience, or a college degree in ac-
counting withm the past two
years.

will be at Sacred Heart hospital
starting at 7:30 a.m. Wednes
day. Physicians who specialize in

tests and x-rays will be free.
To Arrive Early
Patients who have appoint
ments are to arrive at the hos
pital between 7:30 and 8 a.m.,
before eating or drinking any
thing, and should bring urine
and stool specimens with them,
according to the announcement.
Preliminary laboratory work
will be done then, with patients
returning again at their regular
appointment time.
Results of the examinations
will be sent back to the family
doctors of the patients, and re
sults may be obtained from him.
The foundation is especially
hopeful that chronic cases, which
have failed to respond to usual
medication, can be observed, as
well as patients with diagnostic
problems related to rheumatism
and arthritis.
Adenauer Suffers
Bronchial Pneumonia
Bonn, Germany U.R) Chan
cellor Konrad Adenauer, 79, is
suffering from bronchial' pneu
monia, it was announced today.
Adenauer has been confined
to his bed at his home in enarby
Thorendorf since Friday.
The first official medical bull
etin issued since he fell ill said
the pneumonia "is receding" and
that the fever has fallen.
The bulletin was signed by
two doctors who examined the
chancellor this morning. It said
he will have to remain in bed
for at least a week.
It was the first announcement
that Adenauer is suffering from
pneumonia. His illness earlier
was described as a "feverish cold
and sore throat." Monday a gov
ernment spokesman disclosed
that 'the chancellor had bronchitis.

British Sailors Plan

will not be able to watch outside
television but will produce TV
programs of their own.
Vets Day Parade
Plans Under Way
' Plans are now being made for
the 1955 Medford Veterans day
observance, to be held Nov. 11,
it was announced today by Pat
Graham.
Those in charge of the event
have indicated they are particu
larly interested this year in hav
ing floats and other representa
tions from non-veteran groups in
the annual Veterans day parade.
The observance is sponsored
by the Veterans Allied Council
of Jackson County. In charge of
the program is a committee made
up of representatives of Ameri
can Legion Post 15, Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post 1833, and Dis
abled American Veterans Chap
ter 8.

NATO Ground Forces Schedule Maneuvers
Stuttgart, Germany (U.R)
Some 50,000 American. British
and French soldiers Thursday
begin their biggest maneuvers of
the year to test defense strength
in an atomic war."-.
The five-day exercise of
NATO ground forces will make
use of guided missiles and free
flight rockets for the first time
in a major maneuver.
The Army operates 77 troop
information radio broadcasting
stations overseas.
