Workers on Strike
San Francisco - (U.R) Nearly
22,000 telephone workers in
Northern California and Nevada
went on strike today against
the Pacific Telephone and Tele
graph company after failing to
obtain their wage demands in
more than three months of "negotiations.
The strike began as scheduled
at 6 p.m. (PST) three hours after
the company and the three un
ions representing the strikers de
cided at a marathon negotiating
sesseion that they could not come
to terms.
The unions ordered pickets to
take their stations before all
telephone company exchanges in
the area.
Dial Service Unaffected
Of the unions involved in the
dispute, the largest was the CIO
Communications Workers of Am
erica, representing 10,000 oper
ators and 7600 maintenance wor
kers. It has been negotiating
since June to replace a contract
that expired on Aug. 29.
The others were the independ
ent United Brotherhood of Tele
phone Workers, representing
1700 accounting employees, and
the United Brotherhood of Tele
phone Workers of Northern Cal
ifornia and Nevada, representing
2500 commercial employees.
A strike was not expected io
affect local dial service, but
some delays were anticipated in
long distance service. : .
Inconvenience Regretted - -
Louis B. Knecht, director of
the CIO union's District 9, said
the union "regretted inconven
iencing the public' with a strike,
but the company's refusal to
budge has made it necessary."
"The union offered to let
some of its members through
the picket lines to handle em
ergency calls, but the company
refused," Kncht said. .

Beet Harvest Starts
Nyssa, Ore. (U.R) The
eastern Oregon sugar beet har
vest gets under way today, ac
cording to Amalgamted Sugar
company executive Jered Lewis,
manager of the Nyssa plant.
Lewis said factories at
Nampa, Ida., and Nyssa would
begin processing the beets
Tuesday and continue turning
them into sugar until the middle
of February. .
A good crop was forecast by
Lewis. He said it should equal
last years million-ton crop with
a yield of 23 tons per acre.
