Back Stairs: Ike Charged for Meals
By WARRENN DUFFEE
United Presi Correspondent
Denver (U.PJ Backstairs
at tl temporary White House:
Some people were surprised
when the Army ruled that Presi
dent Eisenhower will be charged
for his meals during his recovery
at Fitzsimons Army hospital.
They assumed that the food,
like the rest of the President's
treatment, would be free.
However, the chief executive
Is getting his money's worth for
his $1.10 a day. A hpusewife
trying to stretch the grocery
budget could well be envious.
His daily menus read like
pages from a homemaker'g cook
book. They are well balanced
and appetizing but the portions
are small because the doctors
are limiting Mr. Eisenhower to
1,600 calories a day to keep him
from gaining weight while he is
inactive.
Despite the surprise to many
that the 'President would be
charged for his meals, there ap
parently were even more people
who didn't know the chief execu
tive has the right to treatment at
an Army hospital at all.
The temporary White House
was amazed at the number of
inquiries, some indignant, as to
what right the President has to
use the military hospital.
The answer is simple he's the
commander-in-chief of the armed
services.
Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower, who
hasn't left the hospital since her
husband was taken there Sept.
24, has plenty of tirffe for her
favorite word game, "Scrabble,"
while the President is recov
ering. But she sometimes has trouble
finding someone with the time to
play the game with her. The
doctors, nurses and medical
corpsmen on duty are usually
too busy keeping an eye on the
President.
The first lady also has been
too concerned about the Presi
dent to settle down often to the
concentration the word game
requires.

headquarters at Lowry Air
Force base have a hankering for
